I like listening to owls, and elk and whatever else is roaming around. Not coyotes/wolves though, they kinda creep me out.

it does make things look cool - brighter colors, different lighting. Just tough keeping me and the camera dry!

The light can be more even-that's nice. I keep a rain cover in my bag. Plus, a long lens cover that's more like a raincoat. I love the rain-Riley loves the rain too.

Saw that story pop up on the BookFace today. Those folks are damn lucky to be alive. Let alone uninjured. And at 75yo to survive a roll over down an embankment?!?

They need to buy a lottery ticket and thank Jesus, methinks!

It's winter. I wonder if it'd had happened in the summer, would they have been so lucky?

Sort of relevant to my day today...spent some time waiting in traffic while the CHP hauled a vehicle back onto the road surface in my direction of travel and Santa Clara County Fire put out a vehicle fire in the opposite direction.

Good question. In summer maybe they'd have been driving faster? Less snow to cushion things?

Hard to say. Millions of variables I'm sure.

I pledge not to be a complete idiot when I visit Yellowstone National Park. I will not attempt to remove myself from the gene pool by placing myself near wild animals. I will not jump, walk, or run into extremely acidic and boiling hot cauldrons of fluid. I won't get out of my car to pet the cute animals - even if they do appear to be "big and slow".
I will actually try to obey the laws while I'm in the park. I won't drive like a jerk, I won't throw garbage all over the place, and I will park where I'm actually allowed to do so.
I also pledge to call 911 and report those who are being complete idiots while they are in YNP.
Please, take the Yellowstone Pledge publicly so your friends and family will all know that you actually have at minimum a human level IQ and aren't a total moron.

Thanks for the information on this thread. My wife and I are thinking about driving to Yellowstone in the middle of May this year. We no longer camp cuz we are old :( and like our comforts at this point in life. If you had to pick a town to get a hotel/motel room for 5-6 nights, which would you choose (for park access, amenities, etc)? Sorry if this has been asked/answered already. If so, please just point me to the post #. Thanks.

West Yellowstone is probably the most centrally located with the most hotel and restaurant options.
I'd recommend a night or two in Jackson as well if you plan on seeing the Tetons
Have you thought about getting a cabin for the week? Madison Arm resort has small cabins. Having the kitchen might be nice. Lots of vacation rentals around Island Park/Henry's Lake area too.

We would also like to see the Tetons. Will look into staying in Jackson a couple of nights. Thanks.

/me took the pledge now I need to go to yellowstone. Oh it applies everywhere.
    (edited to add)
It's such a relief I don't have to go all the way to yellowstone to not be an idiot, why I can do it right here.

Another question (what's my limit?) please. It's about 17 hours to Jackson from Tulsa. Our Lexus sedan is way more comfortable and economical than my truck for a trip like that. Will I be kicking myself when I get there and don't have my truck?

In May your sedan should be fine if you aren't camping. It's all paved roads during tourist season!

Any snow in the region in mid May?

you'll be fine in the car. I'd have more out of the way spots to suggest to you if you bring the truck but the car will get you to all of the usual places just fine.

there's always a chance of snow storms all year. They'll plow all of the park roads and parking lots in time for opening weekend (mid april) so everything will be clear come mid may

I've seen it snow in July. Weather up here is fickle. LoL

As MTgirl suggested though the pickup would allow for more adventure. But the sedan is fine if you just want to see all the advertised areas in the park. You'll still see lots from the paved roads!
