if Mammoth is full there are a couple FS camps just outside of Gardiner. And a BLM camp about 30 minutes from the park entrance.
If you're going to be around the west entrance there are several camps around hebgen lake, bakers hole just outside of town or beaver creek near quake lake.
Check out the camps under hebgen and Gardiner districts
    https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/custergallatin/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=5566&actid=29
    And the blm camp

you're not that far away... :notsure:

 I should after 100+ trips down there!

Like a wildlife gate that lets them into base but not able to go back directly onto the hwy.

Have been wondering how to visit the best places on earth while encountering the fewest worst things on earth....thanks for the help.

Now I need to get to Glacier. I've heard it's also super crowded, but not that hard to escape the crowds with some walking.

Go at the end of the season. You run the risk of not being able to go everywhere but the places you can go will have many fewer people. Plus, if it snows, that is still pretty cool.

Yes, I was thinking late September. And you're right, snow is ok, too.

I prefer to avoid campgrounds, I like dispersed area use.

Maybe this fall after the eclipse. Got a lot going here this summer so I have to be happy with local trips. I have to visit a place called Flower Dome because it sounds cool, doing that in July, snow should be melted and the flowers out then.

On the way to the park last night we saw a few elk and a MOUNTAIN LION. Freaking amazed we saw it. Was raining pretty good, Almost dark out, and I see this low slinky thing start to cross the road ahead of us. My brain couldn't make my mouth say the words I was so shocked.
Only the second live lion I've ever seen in my life. First was when I was about 6 years old

Planning on being in the Tetons for the eclipse. I know it will be a mad house down there but I can't pass up the opportunity

I want to be where there's no people for the eclipse, I'm sure I can find an out of the way spot.

    :jellydance: Lucky Girl!

That reminds me, we saw a seal in the Copper River above the Bridge at Chitina...that's 70 miles up stream from the mouth. We had no idea they ranged that far up from the sound. The seal surfaced twice and looked right at us the second time; it looked like a Harbor Seal to me. I even hit Frank on his arm and asked "you see this right, I'm not crazy?" No pic of course, but it was pretty cool. :)
