I have been doing some searching but can't seem to find any threads about removing old broken mud flaps and installing new after market ones.

I just purchased some heavy duty rubber flaps that need to be drilled and screwed in but I can't seem to find any info on how to remove all the old stuff. I guess I could just go out there and experiment, but I like to do a little research first. Any insight out there? I'm sure this has been hashed out before.

I'm pretty sure the stock flaps use the same plastic "rivets" as other parts of the truck. I flathead screwdriver should pop them right out. I'm thinking of replacing my stock flaps with Huskys.

take the screws out and then pull hard on the flaps to get the plastic rivet things out

The stock mudflaps on my trd-offroad have 3 plastic re-usable rivets and 3 10mm allen head screws on each corner for a total of 24 fasteners. They can be removed in about 10 minutes of work

Yeah the old ones have three plastic rivets and two screws/bolts.

You need to just a flathead and put just the center out before they will come loose.

You can use a socket for the screws rather than a screwdriver.

Educate me on the Husky flaps... I have seen several posts where folks have replaced the stock flaps with Huskys. What is the benefit?

My front flaps cracked and broke within 3 years. They were constantly dragging the ground on rutted roads and off road. I never to any serious hard core off roading. I just took all 4 off and trashed them. I figured even replacements would do the same in a matter of time. Don't miss em, in fact I think it looks better and they only did a marginal job of keeping the truck clean when they were on there.

10mm socket/ratchet and a flat head screw driver and 2 mins. use the flat head to pop the center of the clip out and the whole clip pulls out , they are in there a little tight so it may take some wiggling.

The Huskys are pre-molded like the OEM flaps, and fit the fender perfectly. They are slightly shorter for larger ground clearance, with less tendency to rip off.

Mine came with a bolt-nut combination to replace those plastic rivets.

My .02, take them off. If you're running wider tires than the flaps, than wtf are they doing on there. The point of them is to block mud from getting on the vehicle's sides, if your tires are bigger, then they are obsolete. + they look better off anyway.

That's the price you pay for going 4 wheeling... i do agree though. Could always get glass for that problem.

If you have aggressive tires that tend to hold stones and you drive on public roads without mudflaps, it's a bit of a dick move, so thanks from my chipped paint and windshield. You can spit gravel on other traffic, even traffic coming in the opposing direction. Mud flaps don't completely eliminate it, but greatly reduces it. But I also notice that people that recommend removing the mud flaps never live in the snow belt. I can't pull them off with 150+ inches of snowfall a year. Plus I'm not a dick.

It was snow/ice that finally convinced me to take mine off. It built up so thick it finally broke the front flaps. The flaps only got in the way. Toyota is the ONLY truck manufacturer to even offer mud flaps. If they were needed all the other trucks would come with them.
