I buried my truck in the mud this past weekend and did a number on the wheels. Anything I can do to remove the scratches? Just surface scratches, no gouges, but I am pretty disappointed in how vulnerable they are to a little mud.

Don't worry about them, based on your photo there will be more scratches to come! The 1st ones always hurt the most.

Provided you only post a picture of you getting stuck in a field and not the wheel cleaned up itself, how would we assess your damages and give you advice?

Your truck is ruined and you should give me that one and buy a new pro.

There’ll be more. First time I took mine wheeling I got a handful of em but it’s not as bad on the TRDOR wheels since the other face is machined. You could try buffing them..

No big deal. Clean them up and put some black wax on them. Have them powder coated when you can’t stand them anymore.

Pressure wash it, clean all areas where there is mud, take it to the dealership, throw a hissy fit, say that the wheels just turned that color after driving for a while, call toyota corporate and throw more hissy fits, then write 6 paragraphs on how the dealership that you bought the truck to is horrible and that toyota corporate is robbing us of our money for a 50K truck, threaten to trade it in and then go to a full size truck.

Thats not buffing out, on the plus side you definitely look like you use your truck offroad.

You'll need to take all of the wheels of and really clean them. Then use a Polish and buffer. That'll at least tell you if you're going to get them looking good again. Wax after, but you may be getting them powdercoated. They look pretty bad.

I hit a log the other night and was surprised the wheel escaped damage, it was pouring rain at the time which may have helped.

How come the hood was popped?

I went through mud one time years ago. Never again. The fun lasts minutes. The mud lasts a lifetime.

I think the wheels are clear coated, that’s probably what’s scratched. You could probably buff out with polishing compound and a shit ton of elbow grease. Not many wheels finish wise will stand up to that kinda mud when you start spinning wheels like a mad man, so you’d have the same problem with most finishes. You are basically sanding them, mud is abrasive.

Don’t use plastic-dip, it’s fucking worthless on wheels unless you want to totally trash the finish (by sanding it), and if you do that, you may as well use a better finish like real paint.

You could get them power coated for about $100 a wheel.
