I have found that if you change your exhaust system to a dual exhaust you'll get much better life expectancy from you muffler bearings. The exhaust system runs much cooler with the exhaust split between two pipes and bearings.

I noticed that Autozone is now selling water cooled mufflers.

If you think about it, it makes total sense. All that intense heat makes the muffler bearing grease break down within a short period of time, and the bearings will cook themselves, and as we all know that increases exhaust backpressure and decreases high end horsepower.

I'm hoping to have a little extra cash after I do my Christmas shopping. Planning to swap in one of these, run the Toyota long life coolant in it, and get away from having to repack my muffler bearing grease so damn often. Looking forward to less maintenance and a better running truck from here on out.

    Autozone, who would have thought?

tl; dr. Is there going to be a TSB for the muffler bearings or what? Seems like everyone is having issues with them.

I think you might be losing power from the loss of heat in the muffler. I suggest routing the exhaust into the radiator to prevent loss. Also for good measure, add a radiator blanket to keep warm in the winter.

I just browsed through this thread and did any one bring up the fact that everytimeyou replace the muffler bearing a new muffler drive belt is recommended. Old bells tend to stretch and slip resulting in the pulley attached to the bearing getting hot and the heat is transferred to the inner race then to the balls before it gets to the muffler itself. Another contributing factor is unburnt hydrocarboners caused by low compression level. These unburnt hydrocarboners tend to break down the lubricant. Adding a 12 hounce can of compression at the same time the muffler belt and bearing are changed is highly recommended. Check on the can so that you get the proper PSI for your application.

Often the unindoctrinated will replace the muffler belt tensioner, but as it is only an idoler it doesn't effect the heat of the driving muffler belt pulley or the driven pulley on the recirculating ball pump and since the ball pump is hanging out in the air it usually doesn't experience over heating and may actually benefit from extra shielding during the colder times of the year.

And shame on you for probing a tail pipe with the Johnson rod. Using the proper tool for the job is always the best policy. Even if the johnson rod does not get stuck, repeating probing can lead to a prolapsed tail pipe extension sphincter band. Proper procedure is to procure the smoke shifter that corresponds to your particular tail pipe orientation. Left handed smoke shifter for left orientation, right handed smoke shifter for that orientation. Those with both right and left orientations will of course need to get one of each.

I hope this sheds some light on a sometimes dark and misunderstood area of mantenance.

    Jim

A friend of mine had his muffler bearings shoot through his tail pipe and struck a little ole lady crossing the street. All the bearings hit her below the knees. Now she's wheel chair bound fot the rest of her life.

Dammit! Why does toyota keep adding things to compromise the reliability? The first gens dont have this problem.

first gens are worse. they use a two piece MF made in India. Those that were assembled in the USA are a little better, but still use a two piece MF.
