I always keep two meters around. I like the simpson meter for sanity checking & then I use a B&K Precision handheld DMM as my main squeeze.

Get a simpson meter or a second DMM and compare the two...

Try a new battery, new probes & a new fuse in the DMM before calling it "broken". What is a "vlmts"?

Clueless what you are trying to ask.

My Fluke DVM works fine. It tells me when it needs a battery.

If you are saying it's inaccurate, how do you know that vs a problem with what you are trying to read?

As @mctechhweng suggests, comparing to another unit is a good start.

Yes, but what is it doing that makes you think it's 'broken'?

Send us a picture of the meter with the probes installed into their jacks. Also send us a picture of how you made your measurement.

Otherwise tools break all the time. Most of the multimeters you buy in the store aren't very well built & in fact they're dangerous.

I use a B&K Precision 2709B as my primary meter & I have a cheap-o simpson meter as well as a cheap-o DMM just to make sure my primary meter seems to be functioning.

I also have an oscilloscope for when I need to get my hands dirty.

I trust my Fluke. One I got at Sears for just over $100 for general household stuff (clamp meter). My other one is almost 5x that price (Fluke 87V). if I ever were to question either I can send them in for repair or calibration. I don’t think Harbor Freight or similar quality is even worth anything other than contributing to the local landfill.

To check a meter you need one that is accurate and can be trusted or you need to send it in for calibration / repair.

And explain why you need to change the fuse. It is either blown or good. Workie or no workie.

In fact cheap meters can be hazardous to your health. One of the reason a good meter costs a lot is b/c of the circuit protections. Some of these cheap-o made in China have the potential to explode.

Another question you should ask yourself is "Have you ever used the meter to measure current" and do you know how to safely measure current? If you've used the current-meter in the past improperly the meter could be damaged. Improper use of a current meter can kill you! Be careful!

Is that supposed to say 'it's reading 2.0 volts off'?

If so, how do you know? What are you measuring, and how do you know there is not a problem with that device as opposed to your tool?

One other tip is to put the meter into Ohm-Meter mode to measure resistance and try to measure the resistance of the probes. Just tap the probes together and see how much resistance the meter thinks it has in it's own circuitry. Also, stick your probes in a different meter and see how much resistance the probes have.

You can also use a second meter to measure the resistance of the suspect meter in the amp-meter configuration. Measure the resistance of the fuse in the meter as well.

The bottom line is that you need more than one meter. You should have a good one and a couple extra meters to give you confidence in your good meter.

Also; LEARN HOW TO USE A METER!!! IMPROPER USE IS DANGEROUS! Use at your own risk!

Blew the fuse in my 87V because of a short circuit. That’s why it’s there.

I bought the Fluke 323 clamp meter specifically for AC current measurement.
