It can be used as a way to pass on something, but *I* would never use it as confirmation to buy something.

    It is far from flawless.

There should be a disclosure law about this kind of mess.

Did it even run when you bought it?

This thread really chaps my stink wrinkle. I look at them there spaghetti wires and feel the frustration and pain of the OP. Buying a used car is a real gamble and for every chap who finds a pearl of a taco there's two or three innocent dupes who get taken for a song.

I thought the whole point of Carfax was that they offer some sort of guarantee on their reports. I would think some MAJOR damage and repairs happening a year+ before your sale would be covered under said guarantee. Otherwise what good is a Carfax repot anyway?

    Exactly.

None, not worth the paper it was printed on.

OP, I feel your pain and wish there was something I could do to help you. Unfortunately, all I can do is offer advice. First, Carfax is simply a service that collects data on vehicles from various sources, puts it together in an easy to read format and sells it. It is not a service that guarantees anything.

Second, Carfax not infallible. It's actually fairly easy to keep repairs off of a CARFAX report. For instance, just pay cash for your buddy to repair the crash damage on your car. And as you have seen, repairs can pop up long after they occurred due to delays in reporting.

Third, if you read the fine print of the contracts of both Carfax and the dealership you bought the vehicle from, you'll find that you have very little legal recourse. They both know they're not perfect and have protected themselves contractually.

Finally, everyone should realize that services like Carfax are nothing more than a data point when purchasing a vehicle. Other data points - like an inspection by a mechanic you trust - should be employed before making a decision. Even then, things can be missed and problems - sometimes serious - can occur. Remember the famous words, "Let the buyer beware."

Any options for a replacement wiring harness out of a junkyard?

Possible, but they're a real bear to remove and then re-install. I doubt any conventional junkyard will even pull one for you. If you could find a similar vintage Tacoma in a Pick n Pull junkyard, and had lots of time and patience, I guess it's possible.
