Seeking guidance please. My left running light on my 2000 SR5 has been inoperable for some time and I went hunting for the reason why today. While searching for damage I found two (IMO shoddy looking) splices in the green running light wire, one near the shock and the other near the bumper where the harness routes to the passenger side. The first splice sends one green wire directly to the right running light and another down to the second splice; the second splice has three wires, one to each license plate light and one to the left running light.

Are these factory or did the PO do some creative wiring? Voltage checks out fine at each splice but I found my left running light damage further downstream where the insulation melted and fuzed to another wire, so I question if it is safe.

If this is what it is supposed to look like and the melted wire was an anomaly, is there a good way to seal these waterproof, since it’s too late to get some insulated heat shrink around it?

Tagging @TnShooter since I’ve seen you in a lot of these taillight wiring threads!

    Thanks everyone!

liquid electrical tape is about the best you can do if you don’t want to disassemble. i’d probably clean it up good, double check it all works, then coat in liquid electrical tape and wrap in good regular electrical tape.

To answer your original question yes those are factory splices. As to how best to seal them up Toyota usually just uses some good electrical tape and an even tight wrap of it. Liquid electrical tape would probably do well though I've never used it.

I usually wrap the splices in electrical tape and then put wire loom over the taped section. Followed by spiral layer of tape over the loom.

Thanks everyone! My biggest fear was that this was someone’s half-assed fix, was not safe, and the reason for the melted insulation/fuzed wires down stream…

If this is factory then I’ll just patch it up as best I can and try not to think about it, LOL!

This community is awesome, thanks again!
