I carry all the equipment to fix a flat tire. The first aid kit isn't such a bad idea... A tool box would be nice that way I can store a small aluminum jack with all my tools. I also have a small portable air compressor that is handy.

First, you need to have the medical training and expertise to legally use one of these.

Some (but not all) uses would be......

Cardiac tamponade relief (fluid between heart and cardiac sac)
Pneumothorax relief (air between lungs and the chest wall)
Hemothorax relief (blood/fluid between the lungs and chest wall)
Emergency airway (in lieu of doing a tracheotomy)

Those are just a few off the top of my head. I'm sure there are many more.

Chest decompression...I think it's almost like something we do to pop a fish's air sack before we throw it back in.

Chest decompression is the same as relief from a pneumo (air) thorax and/or hemo (blood) thorax. These are also terms used synonomously with a collapsed lung. When the lung collapses, the space (pleural space) between the lung the the chest wall fills with air, blood, or fluid. By inserting the large needle, the air or blood comes out of the space through the needle which will then allow the lung to begin to reinflate. Once the patient arrives at the hospital a chest tube would be inserted into the pleural space and hooked up to suction to allow the lung to fill the void where the air and/or blood was.

Lime? Small green fruity citrus things, or the white powdery stuff that may or may not complement the shovel in certain particular unmentionable possibly intensely stressful situations.
