Best advice right here. I've been off roading since I was 8yr in trucks. You don't "need" all the fancy stuff that most people talk about. The trucks are very capable stock and it will make you a better driver learning that way. It's the Indian not the arrow. Now with that said, all the goodies can make it easier, self recovery if stuck and/or have more confidence taking on aggressive trails. There are limits to a stock vehicle but a good driver can make it go many places.

I never took a class but learned the hard way when I was younger. I really want to take a class with the Camel trophy truck guys. That is crazy shit. Just show up with your truck and get a feel of your comfort level and build up from there. I see a lot of guys on the trail head not wanting to go because it looks difficult but they have a totally capable truck with everything they need and a shit load of lights.

Have fun let us know how you liked it

You made the right first step. Just be a sponge and absorbe the knowledge. Dont wheel alone.

OP, for basic stuff I'd look into A/T tires. Hands down my most impactful mod. You'd be surprised what you can do in 4lo with a stock truck and good tires.

For a class, probably nothing other than basic recovery gear. I have had my stock OR in areas where people in quads and fully tricked out jeeps have been confused how I got there. My answer has always been, "I drove here." Usually they follow with "You running some type of mud tire or lift?" the answer to that is "no, just stock stuff," and they just look at me confused. Just be aware of your surroundings and what your truck is capable of.

Knowing how to pick your lines will help you more than any of the "armor." While some places no matter the line some armor would probably help, the people I have seen where I go use it as a crutch. I can't speak for places where it would likely be needed since I don't have it and don't go there.

I believe the type of offroading and adventures you take will dictate what you need. My mod to-do list has been built on what I do most frequently.

Full tank of gas and a PB&J for lunch.

These trucks are solid off road straight off the lot. If they have a packing list, bring it, but for a 101 course you should be fine as is.

Stay the trail and learn what you need by your own offroad habits. It should go unspoken that you need basic recovery gear duh. Don't listen to people who claim you need armor etc for your first trip or class . You need to find out for yourself what you need. Why buy thousands of dollars on armor before your truck even see' s dirt ?

After your class, I’d get recovery gear(winch, straps, chains, come-along, etc) that you think you may need. Then I’d get some skids and sliders. That should cover you a while.

I’ve been wondering about this. The pred steps came stock on my truck, but it seemed like they wouldn’t be all that great from a clearance standpoint. I don’t do any serious stuff, but I imagine it could be problematic for some. So what broke yours off?

It honestly just depends, skids and sliders are my first choice mods, But not necessary if you're not going to be pushing the truck super hard. Just get basic recovery and maybe tires with a more aggressive tread to start

Remove the dealer installed mudflaps, stow in the back seat. Reinstall the screws and bring a screwdriver. Might want to put them back for the ride home or the crap stuck in treads may sandblast the rockers.

Bring a tire gauge to air down. No need to bring or buy anything else unless the class suggests. Don't buy anything until you've been through the class.

Like many others have said, go with your stock set up and see what you actually need from there. I don't know your skill level but if you are new to off road stay on the trails and don't get over confident. Over confidence gets many guys in trouble. One other thing to remember is that your nice new truck will get dings and scratches going off road. Go have some fun!
