My 2016 TRD just shut off while I was driving down the interstate. Any advice?

I was driving home from work this afternoon when my truck suddenly shut off. I was going about 60 mph on the interstate when a warning light came on stating "A/T Transmission fluid Temp High" and then it just shut off. There was some brief clanging, and I was luckily able to coast over to the shoulder of the interstate.

I waited several minutes and tried to restart and it sounded bad. Clanging sound and the same warning light. I called Toyota care and they came and picked it up and brought it to the dealership.

I know there is a recall on my truck regarding the Crankshaft Position Sensor. I brought it to the dealership when the recall was first issued (July) and I was told that they had no fix at the time and there was nothing they could do. I set up an appointment for next week (10/4/17) for an oil change and to see what they can do about the recall. Looks like my truck will be seen earlier than that.

I only have 17,000 miles on the truck and am pretty bummed out, but thankful to be alive. Be careful out there to anyone who has the same recall issued.

Any advice anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Did you ever have the dealer verify the tranny fluid level? Do you have the tow package?

I did. The dealer verified the tranny fluid level on that particular visit. I saved the documentation. Yes, it is the tow package as well.

Ya, don't remember a transmission recall, that would have blown up TW.

That is a serious episode. You should only be talking to your dealer and Toyota proper. That's the only advice that's important or reasonable. This forum has no affiliation with Toyota or any dealer so anything we say means absolutely nothing.

So my advice: Talk to your dealer. If necessary, talk to Toyota. Nobody here has any clue what the problem is.

Good luck and please report back with the cause and the solution.

I'm thinking CPS . That A/T warning is known to go off when a CPS fails. Where are you located OP? Temperature is known to play a role in that particular failure.

Whoops, I am mistaken. Not a recall relating to the transmission. It is a Crankshaft Position Sensor recall.

Do you need to know, or care?
CPS usually sets off Check Engine light. High Temp sounds like something else. Going to guess this is a one off, but let the dealer diagnose and then come back and let us know.

Thanks for the update. Mine is a 2016 10/15 build and on the recall list. I have been waiting to bring it in for the 25K final free service. Hoping I don't regret this plan- I have 21K now.

Might as well take it in just for the CPS

Don't want to be sweating those 4k miles
