Thanks! Ya, I put the 265s on right after I bought the truck. This is pre-lift/pre-shell, with 265/75s…

I think I’m actually close to finishing all the stuff I’ve wanted to do to this truck since I bought it over a year ago! I’m loving it more than ever, even with the $90 fill-ups lately! I would still like to tuck the exhaust around the t-case and get rid of that low hanging piece of pipe by the crossmember (why oh why Toyota?). Thinking about installing a kill switch too. These days even with insurance, we can’t easily replace our trucks if they get stolen, especially with the mods we like to do (and I can’t buy this truck in this color new anymore).

After a year and a half I got tired of the looks of the pro grille so I ditched it and went back to the stock OR grille. Not that anyone cares, but since this is my thread, I’m updating it…

I’m updating my thread since I got some new 17” SEMA 4runner wheels for my birthday (I have a wonderful wife) and I wrapped em in some new 255/75R17 Goodyear Duratracs. I sold the 265 Wildpeaks I had on it for a pretty good price considering they were almost 2 years old (got $400), and hopefully I’ll sell my old stock wheels soon... which I have here in the classifieds if anyone is interested and in SoCal. I also found a nice used 255/75R17 Duratrac with about 50% tread left so I’d have a proper spare (and it fits under the bed!), and I found a 17” FJ black steel wheel for cheap on ebay for it.

I’m really liking the look of these skinny 32s on my truck a lot more than the 265s. They look perfect with a 1” lift IMO. And although they’re a little taller, they’re lighter weight, so I lost 6 lbs. per each tire/wheel combo compared to my old setup. I can feel a power increase especially taking off from a dead stop, and my MPGs are about the same if not better than 265s (about 18 combined). The Wildpeaks were harder to balance than any set of tires I’ve ever had in my life and even after 3 tries on a road force machine, they were close but not perfect (still had some shaky vibes at about 70-75 mph). These Duratracs balanced easily the first time. I don’t think I’ll ever buy Wildpeaks again since I’ve read about others having problems getting them to balance too. Anyway, here’s what the truck is looking like now…

    few things here and there.

Ohhh.. you had to go and make me want a set of 255’s…

I’ve been contemplating a 1.25 soccer, to pair with my 2” lift, so I can run 285/75/16 without a chop or cutting.

However… I hear I can run some 255/85/16’s and get the 33 with a slightly more narrow tire. I thought it would be a bit too narrow, but your setup looks good!

I am so close to switching back to my OR as well. I just kind of think it makes it look more modern, which I know may sound silly to others. Lol ignore me over here admiring your build!

Thanks, yeah I have no regrets at all about switching back to the stock grille. I like the look of it on my truck the best.

Great looking truck. If I lift my incoming TRD OR, it will also be a mild lift to help promote reliability and longevity of the truck.

Please tell me more about your lift. I realize it's a simple spacer at the top of the front strut. Did it change your ride quality much? What is the 3 AAL?

A 255/75r17 is an interesting tire choice. I've considered 255/70r17 over a 265/70r17 to keep try to prevent any rubbing.

The spacer didn’t change my ride quality at all. Since it’s on top of the strut (and not compressed inside of it), it doesn’t change the spring rate or ride in any way, it just pushes the suspension down further. The factory ride is maintained. This isn’t a good way to lift it if you go any bigger than a .5” spacer (which = 1” lift at the wheels), because larger spacers will cause the shock to overcompress when it bottoms out and will break things unless you extend your bump stops (and limit the up travel).

But a .5” spacer like mine is not thick enough to cause any damage. It’s a great cheap alternative to spending $200+ on adjustable shocks if all you want is a 1” lift. I went with Streetrays .5” aluminum spacers for about $35 for the pair.

As far as the AAL, I have a 3 leaf progressive Add-A-Leaf from Headstrong Off Road. This comes with 3 additional leaves to put under each of your existing leaf packs (and you take out the bottom factory over load leaf). It gives 1.5” of lift, but with the weight of my camper shell, it made for a 1” lift on my truck (which matches the front perfectly) and I maintained the factory rake with my shell on. I wanted to keep the 1” or so stock rake because I load my truck up with lots of heavy gear for work a lot and don’t want any squatting.

There are also single leaf AALs that can add the same amount of lift for cheaper than the 3 leaf ones, but they ride harsher. My 3 leaf rides nice. The weight of my shell helps, but even when I had the shell off, it wasn’t a big difference compared to stock - slightly stiffer but probably wouldn’t even notice of I wasn’t aware it was there. I’m very happy with my choices after a full year and if I had to, I’d do it again exactly the same way.

I LOVE these 255/75/17 Duratracs. They were the absolute perfect choice for looks, size (with my lift), function (I drive a good amount in snow), weight, mpgs, power, etc… I don’t see me lifting this truck any higher, so this is the size I will stick with.

I really appreciate the detailed explanation. I too want to keep the factory rake for the same reasons. I'll be doing a hard tri-fold bed cover so I won't be copying your truck completely but I really like your choices and reasons for doing them.

Any issue with the rear shocks with the AAL?
