Just picked up a new TRD OR manual double cab after testing the 4Runner waters for a few years. It’s awesome to be back in a truck and am surprised at how much I like the 3rd gen after reading TW . Much better stock suspension and smoother clutch compared to the 2nd gen.

At the dealer with 7 miles on the ODO:

On the way home from the dealer:

Had to swap out for the 4Runner trail wheels, just in case 285s are in the future. 265/70r17 KBros will do for now:

Looking forward to many more adventures with my copilot, Penny, who was just a pup when I had a ‘81 hilux

Hahaha bring it! I’ve had a ‘03 double cab 4x4, ‘15 TRD OR manual 4x4, ‘81 and ‘83 hilux, plus an ‘02 and ‘08 4Runner- so far the 2020 is more fun to drive. Just rev the engine a little higher and it has plenty of get up and go

i dunno about best gen. i love my sport a lot, but my xrunner was pretty up there in my all time favoritest vehicles (and i had a lot!) wasnt too fond of my offroad even though i did pump a lot of money into that build. all of em were bought new as a baseline.

Someone should slap a TRD sticker on the back to hold all those wires together :)

The 3rd gen being the first one I’ve owned, I will agree with you that it’s the best gen.

At least the 3rd gen doesn’t have LBJ issues like the 1st gen and frame rust issues as bad as the 1st and 2nd gens.

Don’t get me wrong, I love old school Toyota’s as much as anyone but the 3rd gen is still a solid truck. People always hate on the current Toyota truck while claiming the previous gen was better in every way. This has happened since the Solid front axle disappeared in ‘85! I know people have had issues with the 3rd gen, especially from 2016-2017, but it’s still the best option available today. Especially given the used market prices right now!

Jealousy is a big part, as a lot of 1G and 2G guys can’t afford a newer vehicle, so they like to make up stuff to justify where they are at in life.

The 3rd Gen truck is not radically different from the previous trucks. If you took the body off, you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between a 3G and a 2G.

My 2017 has been trouble free. A great vehicle. Reliable, capable, fun to drive, and turns way more heads than any 2G or 1G ever did. Not that it matters, but the public in general never cared about 1G and 2G Tacoma’s because they had such boring styling. They were ‘old man trucks’ before they left the lot.
