I still don't understand why anyone would want to buy a vehicle in the first year or two of its production.

The other way to look at this is we’re lucky there are enough “early adopters” to buy the first model year so the rest of us can benefit down the road from the improvements that follow the issues they find…

Cool! Glad to be of service.

Now you all can stop being so concerned about what other people do with their money? We know you don't care about us. You just dealing with reasons.

    Quoting the OP here

"Then in March the wheel lug bolts snapped off the hub while driving in a parking garage. Tire shot up into the wheel well and fender. Insurance deemed the car a total loss.
Not the best position to be in, but I pulled the trigger and here we are."

He needed/wanted a new truck. There is risk in purchasing a new truck, new gen. There is risk in purchasing a used truck, old gen. The OP bought a new truck and instead of being thanked for being the phalanx, he's ridiculed.

I find JC 4th Gen's comments to be most helpful. Drive it hard. It will start throwing codes at some point.

I bought a 4th gen somewhat recently, but I hedged and kept my 2011. I would like my thanks now.

I can only speak for myself, but I don’t care what decision you make about which truck to buy or anything else you do for that matter.

Buying a new generation with such significant design changes brings some risk of lower reliability. That’s just a fact. It’s the risk one takes. On the other hand that’s what a warranty is for, with the hope that any issue comes up within the warranty period.

I would not choose to buy the first year of the fourth gen, but that’s just me. Has absolutely nothing to do with you. I’m much more interested in how the OP’s tranny issue plays out and whether it’s eventually found to be an actual defect on the second one, or something else like a brake setting or just a performance quality that doesn’t please him but is within operating parameters.

Don't care. Come back in a few years whenever you fell comfy. Meanwhile, I will be onward to the next gen and away from you and whatever your reasons are.

We are a combination of our biases. When I was first married, 30 years ago, I walked into a regional casino with my spouse. I handed her $20 and went to the bar to watch the game. Twenty minutes later she appears when I'm half way though my beer and states, "we need to leave here immediately." Why? "it cost a buck a minute to be in this place." She's never gambled a dollar since.

I've bought at least 3 new gen vehicles without a problem.

Besides being completely not risk-adverse, my experience has resulted in my bias.

Snickers appears to have a history of embracing, taking-on and then ultimately being awarded for accepting risk.

If no one bought new cars, we would all be driving Ford Model T's.

I was originally shopping for a 2023, but I chose the '24 for a few reasons. The '23 is an old run and needed a bit of a refresh and the '24 just seemed like a much nicer ride. I was skeptical of the turbo 4 cylinder, but that skepticism disappeared as soon as I drove it.

So why on earth would I buy a new model year car???

1.) It is not my only car. If it needs to spend a little time in the shop, it is no big deal to me.
2.) I trust Toyota and think they stand behind their cars. My old truck is a '06 Ford F150 - enough said...
3.) I drove it, and I liked it. It is my decision, and I get to do what I want.

You can do whatever you want. It is not my business, and I really do not care about the choices you make.

I am also going to change my oil when I hit 1,000 miles. Can we spend another 50 pages of comments to convince me how much of an idiot I am??

Im doing my oil at what I approximate at 750 miles next weekend. What an idiot you are to wait until 1k miles, ha. Sorry not 50 pages but a good start to the bullshit.
I'm very happy I got the 24 and out of my 23. People act like toyota doesn't put time and miles in the design before release and just hope it does well. Fools

More than I need but still not enough.
Not sure about the 4th gen/first model year hate but I know mine came with a warranty. Sure hope I don't have to use it for anything but if anything does happen Toyota will take care of it.

lol, dude you need to relax. Amazing how triggered you are by someone else’s opinion. You do realize that there’s a difference between someone expressing their opinion and someone telling someone else how they should feel or act, right? I’m doing the former. It shouldn’t be as upsetting to you as it is. Do you always feel the need to get away from people who don’t share your precise opinion? Must be a lonely world you live in.

Some people are perfectly happy being early adopters and some aren’t. Also, some people like the mountains, and some people like the beach. It’s ok. People who like the mountains shouldn’t get upset about people who like the beach. Everyone has personal preferences.

You’re exactly right, if not for early adopters, new technology would never be affordably scaled to the masses. But, typically only a slice of the population is willing to make the leap. The rest will follow later after the kinks are worked out. Not that the 4th gen is some brand new technology, but there’s a comparison to be made in that less risk-averse people will jump in to a new model.

Sorry you're going through this, but thanks for validating the judgment of all of who decided to wait out the first year of this new model.
