My attempt @ a 2 to 3 drop ... ... more or less...

It's your carrier bearing...it's pushed forward...take some pics of the cb and the back part of the drive shaft

 

from the looks of it, I got lift blocks instead of drop blocks.
drive shaft got pushed forward enough to have it bottom out on the dust cap.

 

... they are a set of Beefed Taco blocks I installed not too long ago. Sadly they seem to be for LIFTED Tacomas and NOT lowered, the offset pin pushes the axle forward in which it bottoms out on the dust cap like that, making the strange noise which (I forgot what that joint is called but it's that thing spinning, grinding into the dust cap of the tranny) is VERY bad.

when I take off the blocks, I will snap a shot of how the block pin lines up on the axle as well as how the leaf pack pin lines up on the block too. it's a HUGE difference (although I got the block installed, I guess I pushed the drive shaft along with it when I installed).

 

the taper is the problem. it's what is pushing the axle forward into the tranny dust cap.

 

The taper isn't the problem. A taper will barely push the shaft in. Your shaft is in really far. Something weird is going on. I just looked at the pics you PMed me and it's hard to tell anything from them.

Since you can get in close and look, try to see if the axle pad is sitting forward from center on the top of the block or rearward from center on the top of the block. Measure if you have to. Otherwise you'll have to remove a block and measure from the front edge (the small end) to the center of the hole and the center of the pin. Then let me know what you get and I can tell you if they are in fact 4x4 blocks for a lifted spring over axle 6 lug.

But before you remove one to measure try looking first...if the axle pad is more toward the front or the rear of the block.

for some reason it's just the driver side that is the problem. I left one of the 4" blocks on (pass) and took off the driver side block. Not sure why but in order to align the block pin into the leaf pack pin I will need to push the axle forward some, which in turn moves the drive shaft into the tranny dust cap ...

 

also took pictures of the center pin/hole on the block - came out to about 3.25" from tip to center (measured from the sorter end to pin/hole). will be posting up later. for now back to the 3.??? drop. going to tough out the stupid squeekies.

 

I did try to put in the blocks when I had the 4x4 leafs back in, the center pin looked like it fit better .... closer to the axle pin hole at least.

I've gone through 2 sets of blocks from Brian and haven't run into this. Very weird indeed.

Here's what I'm seeing...those are old 4" blocks, because the hole and pin are both centered. I started making my standard 4" lowering blocks with the hole forward at 3" and the pin back at 3-1/2" about a year and a half to two years ago.

Other factors...4" blocks on a 2nd gen will lower it pretty far, so that small gap between the tank and axle doesn't surprise me. I know first hand when you get into the drop range you're at on a 2nd gen, offsetting the hole & pin to bring the axle back is important, due to those tranny & driveshaft shields rubbing.

The 5 lug leafs you re installed, they're for sure 2nd gen 5 lug packs? Your original packs? Seems like a leaf (pin-bolt location) problem more than a block problem, even though those old 4"ers aren't offset, they shouldn't make as much of an issue as you seem to be experiencing. They're just normal 4" tapered (1/4 inch-3 degree) blocks.

so if I can get the dust cap for the tranny off, I would be able to still use the blocks? When I took off the middle leaf to the 4x4 leaf pack I have and had the helper bags installed w/the 1" soda cans, I let the back drop all the way and let it sit on the frame. I didn't get the rubbing or anything, and that was past how much of a drop I got with the 4" blocks. This is why I am puzzled about the drop, I have installed drop blocks before, and never had this problem either (1st was on a 97 Dakota, 2nd was a 93 S10 Blazer).

Yes, even have the numbers still on them. I don't get it either. If it's a pin bolt location problem and these are reg. 4" drop blocks, but my 1" blocks fit ...
