thought i would start a thread on here to keep track of my truck and what i've done with/going to do with it. its a 1998 v6 4x4 that i've had since august 2013 and has been my daily driver since i parked my old jetta coupe. i looked around for 3-4 months until i found this one, was the cheapest truck with the lowest mileage that i could find in all that time. as a bonus the previous owner had done a ton of cool mods to it which saved me a lot of work/money in the long run. i really only need a stock truck at the time but i couldn't pass on this one otherwise i would've probably bought a ford..

also i bought a new camera last year so i try to take lots of pictures. anyways heres the truck when i first got it, came with the bedliner, arb front bumper, cbi rear bumper with tire swingout, 33" maxxis tires and procomp rims, full OME kit, and parts to do a front tundra brake conversion

    DSC_0183_zps3431994a_1242e4590fce872fa70b0777f83f0ec30bf40a71.jpg
    DSC_0178_zpsc1042b15_3c738f57fb09e4484e45c328a8ae1776595117f2.jpg

the first thing i did when i bought it was have all of the fluids changed out, engine oil, trans, diffs, etc and also bought a new agm type battery for it. also had to change out a leaking tcase output shaft seal. then came the brakes, had to repair a seized ebrake cable and clean out the rear drums that were full of mud, then instead of just replacing the front pads and rotors i had the tundra conversion done and put used stainless steel lines. stops on a dime now

    DSC_0208_zps4c2365b3_e2e628cc7ea51bec216722ce5fe155970f6e3f21.jpg

then after a few months into winter i started getting this clunking sound, knew the ball joints were all still original so i ordered some parts and changed out the upper +lower ball joints and the inner and outer tie-rods.

    DSC_0237_zps29e0ca17_c8b0beabd141fa6ca85094b044b0b4c78cbbed77.jpg

all the old parts in a pile

    DSC_0238_zps69a62179_c3e9a51e23e981c9af8cf83fd4bd789efa336374.jpg

this week i got working on my camper shell that i got in a trade, it was originally dark green and had a broken window so i replaced that with plexiglass i cut out and sanded the shell down so i can roller paint it black

    DSC_0274_zps8f623d73_7cdb96f291e0ad1270496efbecee8be19908501e.jpg

also i did the rear diff breather extension and the shift boot mod i saw on here (sorry can't remember the name of the guy who came up with it but thought it was a great idea)

    DSC_0264_zps7ae81d68_8b7cad216b3950d0349c869515dc1554d858bd63.jpg

that's where im at so far, been pretty heavy into just maintenance and i am pretty locked down during the year as a university student but got a field job with husky lined up for the summer so i will be moving just north of edmonton and am planning on catching up on camping and exploring then!

I just found your thread, and it's coming along pretty damn good already! Good to have another Canadian on the board. Digging that CBI bumper, definitely wanna get my hands on one of those, but can't afford it atm. Rims as well, I'll be seeing a set of those on my truck one day.

thanks buddy! i'm pretty much out of funds now until summer but still have some stuff stockpiled to do as the weather gets better.

i collected parts/picked some off my car to install a 4channel amp for the speakers as well as a 10" sub + mono amp to install, the PO gave me some bedlined bolt-on CBI sliders i need to put on as well, finish the topper shell, and i need to grab some bolts to put the factory skid plate back on after i wire wheel the rust off it and re=paint it black. that should keep me busy for tinkering until summer then i should just be driving and enjoying it while working! that is the plan anyways

here is those pics of the rear bumper, i couldn't afford it either so i'm glad the po could haha

That bumper looks goooooood. What's the temperatures like in Calgary right now? I'll be heading out east for the summer in a month, hoping for an early spring and early seeding season.

thanks man, it also came with a water/gas can carrier to mount on the swing out but i like how simple and clean it is with just the bumper sans accessories, at least until i actually throw enough gear in it to require mounting stuff outside of the bed

the temps aren't too bad right now, the week before last was beautiful around 0 to +10. now the temps are back down to -5 to -15 or so with a couple cms of snow over the past couple of days. pretty frosty still but in calgary things can change really fast! how far east are you heading? stopping in AB?

I farm near Lloydminster during the summer on my father in laws farm. Should be doing the Whipsaw this summer with a buddy of mine from AB and Maplemoose, you should join us, it'll be a mini CAN-TW meet.

ok right on, oh i checked out your build thread today and it was great, i loved the video of your big trip! that was a ton of miles haha.

do you have a date already planned for whipsaw? my work contract for the summer is may 1st to august 29th, mondays to fridays with no holiday time which kind of sucks but i do need the money for school. i'd have to drive over from the redwater/athabasca area just past edmonton so maybe driving around 36 hours or so there and back and including the trail might be a bit tight for a weekend trip haha (i think thats a reasonable time estimate ?). but let me know when you guys are planning to go and i can let you know if i can make it work!

Makes me want to Raptor Liner my rocker panels so badly.

    Good looking truck.

If you want my useless and unsolicited opinion, I'd take off the door badge (or derp them black) and paint your door handles black.

thanks, the bedliner on the body is tough! i like having it on the rockers a lot, on the hood and fenders adds some extra weight though. but no rock chips so i can't complain hah.

yeah no worries i agree with you, i was going to get to that eventually. are the side door badges just double-sided taped on or are there any clip holes hiding back there? i was thinking of just taking them off and then painting the door handles black. i have never derped anything before haha

I'd be going near the end of the summer in August, the original plan was to aim for the first week of August when I head home to BC. We'll talk more about it, there's still a lot to plan and maplemoose and I haven't really decided on a date yet.

finished the topper shell, the roller paint job and rustoleum house paint turned out nicer than i thought it would. also put on the other wheels, and bolted on the cbi sliders that were sitting in my shed. there is so much room in the back with the shell on but the weight sure is noticeable, especially with the other stuff added on now

i need to make a run to the junkyard to find some bolts for the stock skid plate which i may wire wheel and paint black too. its got a lot of rust on it now. i also took off the door badges with my girlfriends hair dryer and some dental floss.

before the end of winter i removed the front sway bar and links. driving on the highway with that topper on was awful, with no sway bar and just a little bit of wind it got pretty sketchy. sold the topper after having it for just a month or so and bought a toolbox for the bed instead, much better ride and now was able to move all my tools/junk out of the cab. i have since painted the toolbox black, as well as repainted the front grill surrounding.

    DSC_0542_zps6cd73ab6_0225bf37bb71cb09f140c4c70bfef35d99752eec.jpg

i also finished wiring in the 10" sub with ported enclosure and mono amp. right now i had to sacrifice the rear drivers-side seat for it but eventually i may build a less bulky, more permanent sub-box.

also extended the rear-diff breather up to the gas cap area.

the other day i got some free shackles from a member of a local toyota club and will soon be picking up a shackle-receiver to replace the ball hitch that i have

i need to start taking more picture again i haven't picked up the camera for a while!
