Just did mine and a buddy's this past weekend. Thanks @David K ! Question for you though: When I removed the stock breather, I heard the diff depressurize (like opening a can of soda: tissss!). That normal? It did it on both trucks so I really didn't think too much of it, but thought I'd ask anyway.

 

That's why you are doing the mod - the pressure blows the seals.

 

That union is the same part number that you can use for the 1st gen, correct?

 

I believe so, I did this in August on my '02. I just printed the picture and took it to the service counter a Toyota, the had the part in two or three days. On mine I routed it up to the fuel filler next to my gas cap.

 

Hey know that we went over this and I apologized because I could not recall where I read it. I still havent done the mod but will be soon. I was still just curious on my original question.

 

Hey Ham. Here is my solution to protecting the breather. I just did mine a few weeks ago. I drilled two small holes in the storage box (instead of one larger one to run the breather through) and zip tied the breather to the outside of the box. This places the breather in the bedside where it wont ever be touched (unless I get t-boned- but then I'd have bigger problems). When you look inside my cubby, all you see is the head of the zip tie and I don't have to worry about anything beating on my breather. Let me know if you need help- I'll shoot over. It seriously takes less than 10 min to do.

 

Since the stock one-way breather is still being used, wouldn't the original problem still exist? Once the diff cools, it will need to equalize pressure by sucking air in via the path of least resistance...a.k.a. the oil seals. You would want to install a two-way breather and make sure it's always above water level.

 

WHO is using the stock one-way 'breather'? That is WRONG! The mod is to use the (true) two-way breather (that 4WD Tacomas use on the front diff).

Did order the parts they said its for 2004 Tacoma... Oh well I ordered it anyway hahaha

 

They certainly wouldn't have been able to use your VIN. 2004 was probably the last time the factory used one on the rr axle that made sense, lol.

How tight should you screw the new union part into the rear differential housing?

 

i did mine this weekend.
I have some things already in my rear driver side compartment so I placed breather in the cutout above the wheel well in the bed.
Pretty straight forward drilled a clamp near by in the inside to help hold the line up.

I just tightened with combo until it was on there snug. I didn't catch a torque value.

 

So, I'm assuming (and double checking) that the part number in your very first post IS for the "2-way" breather?

Also, I can't remember if I put a breather at the end of my hose back when I did this mod a couple years back...or, if I left the far end of the hose open to air. Besides maybe a little dust getting into the hose, does this really even matter at all?

The package in post #1 says "breather" It's your truck, but I would put a breather on the hose.

 

Yea, they're breathers, yes. The thread I quoted was a discussion about "breathers". I was confirming that the pictured one in first post was in fact the "2 way" and not just some "1 way".

Meanwhile, I don't mind using a breather (If I did happen to skip that step back then). My truck and most other trucks have survived water getting into the diff. I doubt, in reality, that a little dust in the air will hardly reach down a 3 foot hose, into the diff and do any real world damage to the gears....again, as I was also asking, unless there's something else to it all besides a little dust in the tip of the hose
