Actually had a similar thing happen to me. Called my local dealership parts dept and he quoted me like $30. I told him that people online are getting them for less than half that price and he said that the prices can vary from state to state and between dealerships. After going back and forth for a minute i agreed and asked him to go ahead and order them for me. He called me back less than five minutes later and said that "there was a mistake with his computer and it gave him the wrong prices" and the correct price was like $14 and change. I was really confused but whatever, I got my parts.

This is how I did my breather mod to give other members some ideas also. 20180629_155355.jpg underbed.jpg 20180702_212828.jpg 20180702_211541.jpg 20180702_213536.jpg

    Great write-up, thread! Thanks!
I just ordered the parts today, quoted me $27. There is a dealer 1.5 hrs south of me that has traditionally been significantly cheaper on parts but 3 hr round trip to save a few bucks? I’ll be doing this mod Friday before FluidFilm party Sunday! Considering tail-light location so I don’t damage the breather valve in the bed cubby.

What would y’all think of this?

316 SS 1/8” BSPT male to 3/8” NPT female adapter
304 SS braided high pressure line 3/8” NPT male to 3’8” NPT male, 24” in length
316 SS 3/8” NPT female to 1/4” NPT female step down adapter
1/4” NPT male low pressure hydraulic line with a 5/16” ID to mate to the OEM barbed connection to the 2-way valve, 4’ in length

    Overkill, but bulletproof.

Cause I’m a lazy bastard and only made it to page 8 before deciding this is something I need to do and have a couple questions that weren’t answered in the first 8 pages...

    1) Will the parts in the first post work for a 3rd gen?

    2) I sunk my truck pretty bad about 2 months ago. Water in the cab and everything... it was a shit show...wife in tears and kids crying. Anyway, after I do this mod, I should probably replace some fluids to start fresh aye? What fluids might that be? My dumbass figures it’s the diff fluid... duh, but want to be sure.

    3) While I’m at it, is there anything else I should be fixing, extending, replacing? I dunno front diff fluid... or something else?

Thanks for putting up with me,
    Mike

How many miles on your truck? Service interval (for 2nd gens at least) is every 30k mi for T-case and both diffs. I did mine at 60k and the front diff was pretty damn nasty looking. Guessing the previous owner never did anything

What Im getting at is it may be best to do all three while you're at it. But you'll be able to tell if theres actually water in it as soon as you drain the old stuff out of the rear

Quoting my own post. As stated, I’m lazy at times, but more impatient than anything else, so I kept digging around. Turns out 3rd geners are doing this mod with the same parts.

Coming up on 10 years since I did this mod (and made this thread's opening post)... and my breather is still breathing, not dead yet!
Honestly, I have had no reason to question the operation of it. Recently, I had the diff fluids changed (thanks to Jason, aka "Speed Freek" of Vista, CA) and no issues with the fluid, about 35,000 miles since the last change.
It is maybe one of the easiest mods you can do to your Tacoma with the greatest benefit to differential longevity, if you ever cross water over 18" deep!

Thanks for posting, just did my 2020, hid breather behind tailcap. I tow a boat and never knew this was an issue.

It's so easy to do, and could save you a lot of money and problems!

Read the first post, ordered the parts for my 3rd gen, only to realize the original posty had a 2nd gen, only to realize that it doesn’t matter and it will work

If you look at the date of my post, Sept. 2010, you will quickly know there was no concept of a third gen back then... LOL!
Hey, isn't great that Toyota makes such great parts they can be used for "generations to come"?
Hope the mod goes well for you... My 2010 Tacoma has had that mod, unchanged now for over 10 years and 100,000+ miles!

I logged on just to post that I’m impressed David K is still alive on the forum. Haha! 10 years later! Wow... This is the kind of trial and error I live to hear about before I apply the mod! Thanks David!

Several OG old farts still logging in.

And to keep my post relevant to the thread, I've been running a diff breather mod for like 8 years now. No issues and no fear of water crossings.

The breather mod is on my 1st Gen to-do list.
I plan to use the stock breather, and remove the cap. Maybe.
