if you want a real LSD youll need to swap I believe 07 and down???

As all the current LSD's are computer controlled and not mechanical

I could be incorrect on the year though

Am I correct in assuming you have your own LSD diff you want to put in the axle you're trading yours for?

Either way, I totally called dibs first :D

At first I thought that the Auburn diff that I bought would work in our open diffs, because I thought they were all 8" and only the stock LSD diffs were 8.4". But I did a bunch of research and it turns out I was wrong and that only the E-locker is the 8", and all the other diffs (at least in our 2nd gens) are 8.4".

Sorry about the confusion man, that is my bad.

I have recently updated the first post to say I'm looking into just trading for a stock LSD axle from the years 05-08.

I also found out that the stock LSD is an Eaton LSD and it is rebuildable unlike my Auburn LSD that is not rebuildable and is trash once the clutch plates wear out.

Again I am very sorry for all the confusion to you The Traveler and to all others that have messaged me with an open diff.

Idk how dibs would work in this situation, unless I have many reasons to hold it ;) JK.

I do have an LSD waiting to go into an axle, but found out it won't work for 2nd gen tacomas.

So, in a nutshell, S.B. has an Off Road locking differential (desired by nearly anyone who goes off road for extra traction) but wants a mechanical limited slip differential (only available in '05-'08 Sport TRDs) for slippery street traction... is that correct?

I have been offline and got a PM linking this thread I just read this morning... sorry I wasn't quicker to reply.

S.B., is that what you want the mechanical limited slip for? Why not just use the 4WD when the road is icy or slippery?

I want a LSD so I actually have traction on the road, especially on right turns.

You say use 4wd when slippery, but towing through shit weather (snow and icy roads) 4wd only does so much when you have 2 open diffs (towed this past winter, one of the scariest things I've done). For on road the LSD is a way better choice.

Makes sense now. FWIW, you may be dollars ahead and have a better rear end if you buy a non Toyota LSD 8.4 open diff and install the diff of your choice.

This catalog does not show fitment into anything newer than 2005 but they will fit according to shops that build high performance rear ends.

    http://www.eaton.com/ecm/groups/public/@pub/@eaton/@per/documents/content/ct_128302.pdf

I have a non e-locker third waiting to have the new Truetrac installed and then the third will be swapped in. My truck is not e-locker equipped Prerunner 2wd.

For grins have you emailed any of the shops that build the thirds and asked if the diff will fit if the e-locker input were capped and the wires stowed. Then it could be swapped back if needed later.

Supposedly, even though the diffs are badged as 8 and 8.4, the gears are the same size. Don' hold me to this exactly, I did a lot of reading before buying my parts and it was very overlapped and confusing.

My thought, keep your housing, get an e-locker third built with a Truetrac diff, cap the e-locker actuator input, stow the wires plug and play the entire third. Assuming this is mechanically possible. Keep the original third in a sealed five gallon pail with corrosion prevention fluid sprayed on the precision parts.

No other locker or LSD will fit into the E-locker third. And the "8.4" third will not fit into the E-locker axle housing without some serious modification.

Yes the 8" and 8.4" ring are the same physical size, but the thirds are different and the 8.4" has 12 ring bolt instad of 10 as in the E-locker.

I was under the impression ir was made by someone else, a Japanese company. Possibly there are two manufacturers.
