I was just leaving my garden today, and as pulled out the engine just guit running. I noticed yestetdsy when i started it up ,it sounded like the alternater bearings were noisy, but it stopped after a minute of running. Does this sound like a timing belt broke. I have 172000 miles on the truck and as far as i know i dont think it has been replaced?

    Is it electrical?

My truck used to die a lot after putting it in reverse but would start right back up.

Not enough information, could be anything....what kind of shape is the truck in, do you hammer and abuse it? The reason I ask is my timing belt had 275,000 before I replaced it, and it looked fine when I opened up the front to replace it...I do not hammer my rigs anymore...did you get out, pop the hood and try to locate the noise before you hit the road?

Uh, there also in an internal belt on the 3.4's, chain timing on the 2.4 and 2.7...one could not see it if broken....I think you are confusing this with the belts that run accessories (obviously external)...

Jeesh, he said TIMING belt, that is an internal belt, not an external accessory belt....I give up..

I assume your saying it no longer starts anymore so before going too far check all your fuses and test them even if they do look good, check the simple stuff first before looking at other stuff. the noise you heard might be totally unrelated

a simple blown fuse for the EFI or weak battery is all it takes for it to no longer start

I had the same noise and it was from the water pump. But the bearing noise lasted a while. It eventually locked up on me. Any coolant leaks?

Edit: the noise when it first started would go away just like yours did at startup. At the time I had no idea it was the water pump. I was convinced it was something external for such a nasty sound and could never isolate it. Driving down the road one day and the truck bogs down and quits running. Got out and coolant was gushing out. The timing belt also got shredded in the process. So before you attempt to start it, I'd pull the timing cover off and take a peek. It's easy to do as well. Along with the other fuse checks and whatnot too... I have a couple vids of my water pump noise.. Lemme find them so you can compare.
