My experience of towing 4,700lb travel trailer, which now weighs closer to 5,000lbs… maybe.

I’m not sure I’m following you, are you talking about cargo capacity shown in the door jam photo above or axle load rating? Does your truck have a tonneau cover, bed mat, side steps etc? Also check to see if there is a second weight sticker in the door jam area that was put on ‘at port’.

Your trailer weighs more than 480 as some of its weight is being transferred to your truck via the hitch (50/60lbs likely).

Most Tacomas GVWR is 5,600lb. So per the picture below my truck is only allowed a hitch weight of 460lb.

The below weights are for my 2020 ORLB with a full tank of fuel, wife, 80lb dog, tonneau, bed mat and 100lb of stuff.

When I tested my truck, it was 100% stock. Me and some small items in the back seat and I was off the scales.
You are right that my trailer weight more than 480lbs, maybe about 50-75lbs of tongue weight, but the amount is very little compared to what a Tacoma should carry.

You're scale ticket shows the same thing. should you carry anything in your truck like a wife, dog, etc there is very little load available for owners to carry. These trucks weight so much and Toyota says that you should be able to carry 940lbs (door sticker), my scales ticket shows that with a stock truck I could only carry about half of what Toyota says. I would guess that today, my truck as it sits without me in it is maxed out or very close, bigger suspension with heaver springs, bed rack and cover I built, plywood floor in back, Dometic refrigerator and tools with larger10 ply tires.

I don’t know what to say. My truck weighed 5140lb with us and stuff in it. We and stuff weigh 480lb which means empty truck weighs 4660lb. Add cargo capacity 940lb = 5600lb gcwr.

Maybe the scales are off, maybe you forgot about stuff in the truck, maybe the tongue weight is underestimated.

Toyota doesn’t pluck these numbers out of thin air…

I am thinking your comment about the scales being off could be the answer, not a lot else makes sense, but that off a lot.
I didn't have an option of checking another scale, since this one is almost 2 hours from my house and the next one I could find is about that far away, in a different direction. I went there to weight the trailer, so that I could figure out what my empty trailer weight was and then later the equipment I carry, haven't gotten back to weight the whole setup.

I know that I didn't forget about stuff in my truck, because I had a conversation with friends while still at the scales and thought that my truck weight was high and I couldn't carry the full payload that Toyota says.

here is a picture a scale ticket for my truck and picture of my truck loaded up headed to drive the Pony Express trail, this time it was loaded with a full fridge, 4-5gal fuel cans, 2-5gal water cans, food and supplies for 2 people for a week out, recovery equipment & light tools, RTT, larger tires, heavy duty suspension, full aluminum skid plates.

Sorry but I believe that I should be able to take my Tacoma TRD OF on a trip with a friend to go camping and not worry about being overloaded.

Reality is 950+/-lb is not a lot of weight for payload. The Tacoma does not have a good payload. If you have 4 passengers you barely have enough payload left for luggage to go on an airplane. It’s just the way it is.

Sadly the way you’ve set your truck up you’re officially over weight and especially when towing your trailer… Cool setup by the way.

TBH most people are oblivious to being overweight or just plain ignore it.

Personally, I think the Tacoma has a pretty decent payload for a 1/4 ton truck. Hell, some 2.5 Gen Tundras are down to 1100 lbs depending on trim package.

If you ever make it through Colorado Springs area (or Denver) again, hit me up. We can go play on some passes. You can take my truck. Some people have taken me up on that offer…

The comment about being overweight…very true. Mostly the latter though.

    Thanks

yes, I know I am overweight and I adjust my driving to that, like leaving more room between me and the vehicle in front. I also have upgraded the suspension set up and tires to handle that weight and keep the truck level. The RTT has been moved to the trailer and maybe a couple of fuel cans, so less weight will be carried in the truck.

Bare in mind the extra weight of your oversized tires (stock OE Wranglers weigh 35lb) is unsprung weight, depending on the tires maybe 50lb total could be removed from payload if you’re trying to rationalise things :)

Cheers, that may well happen. Spent 3 winters up in Allenspark back in 2010, then left after the flooding for HI, looking back on life we probably should never have left.

We revisited CO early last year and enjoyed the visit, there’s a small chance we may end up coming back.

after having rocks rip the tread of a tires (2 different ones, one time less than 1000 mile on it) while out in the middle of no place and seeing it done to friends running “C” rated tires, one time on the Dempster Highway, I will never run anything other an “E” rated tires. I love my Cooper STMaxx.

I'm curious why your leaving Hawaii. PM if you don't mind sharing but don't want it to be public.

Also, I have purchased Fusion and have began to mess with it some and already asked a few questions on the Fusion thread. I'll likely take you up on your dropbox offer once I'm set up.

I purchased the fusion app and have began setting exploring. PM inbound on your dropbox offer.

Wow Mark, that photo confirms why "snow birds" exist. :) I'd be heading to Florida too.

Have you found that the Tymate TPMS is any better than what the truck system provides?

Best by far was Southern Utah, simply amazing. If you go there go to Valley of the Gods and give monument valley a miss, whilst in the area spend a night at Goosenecks state park and camp feet away from a 1,000ft drop… amazing!

We’ve spent many nights in southern Utah mainly tent camping. Zion, Bryce, Grand Staircase, Cedar Breaks, Arches, Capital Reef. All fantastic. Wish I had my truck then. Last trip was in a RAV4.

All going to plan our next location is going to be northern Arizona, I’m really excited to be within a days drive of some awesome places to explore.
Kanab was another awesome location along with Vermillion cliffs. Did some great sand dune driving out there… lots of drifting and keeping momentum. :burnrubber: I’m always impressed with what the taco can do in stock form. One drive we went to a slot canyon and descended a pretty good grade which lots of atv’s use, as we were heading down the wife asked “we’re going to be able to make it back up right” I replied “sure”. Didn’t want to freak her out but I had my doubts :D
