If you are going to be doing your own work, you should invest in a good scan tool, not the $50 cheap thing from Walmart. If you have a transmission or airbag code it wont be able to read it, and will have to go pay the dealer to check it.

I was just telling someone else that was looking for a scanner that could read SRS codes to buy a used Snapon MT2500. It will read engine (with module actuations), transmission, ABS and SRS data. I paid $500 years ago for mine but with all the European, American, and Asian cartridges with all the OBD1 connectors. You can probably get one now with just the OBD2 and Asian cartridges for around $200.

    Its a sound investment.

Never thought of doing this. How much is it? Where would I get this done? Do you think it'll even make a big enough difference?

I used to have a pretty decent one. But lost it during the move. I'll have to dig up the boxes and find it later.

Any decent tire shop can sipe your tires.

It won't help as much as proper driving/braking, but it'll help with water displacement.

I asked for a bull bar for Christmas lol. Being the same age as you.... I feel like its only a matter of time before I mess up, and get to make that fateful phone call breaking the news to my folks, oh and then getting my ass chewed

NO on bull bars. They multiply the damage. Look at the photo at my grille. My hella light multiplied the damage from the trunk of the car to my grille, causing it to crack. If it weren't there, the grille wouldn't even have touched, and I would've had my uncracked grille. Same with bull bars. Only multiply damage.

Get a plate bumper maybe. I'm pretty sure you protect your truck but you really cause a lot of damage to the other guys.

I'm not the only one who can't drive in the rain out here. On the way home, there was three crumpled up cars, sirens and fire department, and ambulances everywhere. Hope they're ok. The ground is just too slippery to go fast.

Thats good to know... I have been under the wrong impression then. How exactly does a plate bumper work? Never heard of one until this thread

Plate bumpers replace the whole bumper with high strength steel or aluminum. Much more durable, better approach angles, but expensive and pretty heavy. There are some examples. That's definitely something on my wish list.

Glad there were no exotic cars involved and no one was hurt. You've learned a lesson without anyone being hurt and not horribly expensive. This is why we buy insurance.

40 years ago my first wreck was backing out of a driveway and hitting a huge parked RV trailer. Bent his bumper and smashed my 1970 Ford Mavrick spoiler and trunk. You'll laugh about it years from now. My sister's first wreck was with the same car hitting the only other car in the mall parking lot at 5:00AM. We still laugh about that.

    Sorry it happened!
Truck looks pretty good considering. And way to be a man and claim full responsibility. Many guys, even fully grown adults, would have found something to blame it on to make it not their fault.

i had an 06 tacoma pre runner. some little 16 year old asian girl that barely got her permit driving in her boyfriends ~2010 2dr lancer evolution pulled out in front of me. i slammed into the front left tire and bounced off her and into the center divider, and spun around a few more times. i ended up shattering my front right pro comp rim in half, bending my rear axle on the passenger side (yes, the axle was bent inside and so was the housing outside). had the truck towed to my mechanic buddy's work, which was a toyota dealer. when the claims adjuster got there, my buddy pointed out even more stuff than i mentioned, including needing a new frame. it was totaled.

she admitted fault for not seeing me coming. so her insurance cut me a full check for almost 19k after removing the 3k to finish paying my truck off. bought my 2000 4x4 and then some with the money :-D. couldn't be happier since this is the truck I wanted to begin with.

everything turns out ok in the end. or at least i hope she's ok......

Now that is a crash. You said she was ok, but were you? You sounded like you got the rough end of that stick.

Glad you OK man! Rain here can get you before you know it! I have have done a 180 off the road and into some grass in the rain at 20mph on a back road heading home. road people do 40 and even 50mph when it’s dry and when it’s wet there is always wrecks on it. luckily the grass was level with the road and no one was coming the other way(crossed over the on coming lane) only thing that happened was truck got a little muddy. I’m almost 24 and am lucky that that is all that has happened to me.

FYI watch out for ICE if we ever get snow. we get quite a bit of ice and even black ice really had.
