What your smelling is either unburnt fuel being expelled, fuel fouling the catalytic, or burnt/leaking gear oil. Both can have a sulfur smell when burnt.

No part out. his parents are making him repay and rebuild it.:notsure: No idea how realistic that is though.

I know you've helped me a lot so far, but I have more questions.

    1) what would cause fuel to be unburnt
    2) fuel fouling the cat, so how would I fix this? Replace the cat?
    3) there's no leaks under the truck so leaking gear oil is out of the question, however it could still be bad. I doubt the previous owner ever changed it. It was on my long list of things to do, but should I move it to the top and do it right away?

    1. A misfire or a rich running condition.

    2. First by fixing what is causing #1. Once that cat is damaged, it needs to be replaced.

    3. Gear oil/transmission fluid, by my standard, is one of those 25k to 30k mile service items, some do it once a year at around 10k miles. There will be plenty of people that want to chime in and say the manual says this or that. Most will go 100k miles before changing it. If you have not done it, then do it now, and again two years from now.

Imagine the screen mesh on a screen door, the tiny grid openings that make up that screen. Then imagine if you take this screen mesh material and layer it 12" thick so that all the holes line up. That is basically what is inside a catalytic. A metallic honeycomb plated in precious reactive elements platinum, rhodium, and palladium.
