The warning light did its job .light goes on so you shut off the engine before any damage is done . Curious like others was it caused by a faulty part burning oil . Or the tech at the dealership didn’t properly check the oil when they received the truck . Best of luck .I personally Check my oil dipstick after Every oil change and trips .

With your line of thinking, trouble will follow.

Who would buy a new car and not check the fluids? A. the guy being towed.

You sure it had no oil? Tough to see new oil on the stick.

Lemon laws are so commonly misunderstood. They vary by state but typically require the vehicle to have exceeded a certain time to repair or a certain number of repair attempts without correcting the problem. You don’t get to just say, hey there was a defect, lemon law, before the dealership has an opportunity to do a warranty repair if possible.

I mean, that sucks, and you have every right to be pissed, but it's a brand new truck. Take it in, have the work done under warranty and move on with life.

Having been in the new car business for many years, on both the service and wholesale side, I can tell you that there is a billable predelivery inspection done at every new car store. The purpose of is avoid this sort of issue. It’s not because they love and care about the customer so much. It’s because many manufacture-to-dealer incentives are predicated on CSI surveys. Bad CSI surveys cost dealers lots of money....and it also has some bearing on the number and type of unit that can ordered for retail ( allocation). The manufacturer actually allows the dealer to charge them for this inspection upon the vehicles arrival at the dealership. I spent 30 years in the car business and can tell you many stories about new units showing up with empty transfer cases, bolts and nuts missing on key suspension parts, overfilled or underfilled crank cases, radiators with no coolant, fan nut/bolts loose or missing....obvious things overlooked. One time we got in an Expedition with leather front and rear seats and a cloth middle seat. That’s the purpose of a predelivery inspection.... to catch issues like this before the customer takes delivery. So either this truck did not get that inspection, the inspection was poorly done or the truck developed some sort of serious problem in a very short time.

Was my concern also… it took me a while to figure out how to read it. That said he did say low oil pressure.

I very lightly scuffed the normal range on my stick with Scotch-Brite, just enough to dull the shine on it, made it quite a bit easier to read the oil level.

Is it really though? Your vision has to be pretty bad to not see the oil on that dipstick.

My wife couldn't see a huge light post in a parking lot.
My son in law couldn't find the dipstick if it was in his pants...
I still have good eyes but who knows what the OP can see.
I do know it could be below dipstick and still have enough oil but I would want a 200K warranty on that engine.
That said, once you drive it off the lot it's your responsibility to check oil, not the dealer or Toyota. I checked the oil on my new truck before I signed the paperwork.
OP made a mistake... he assumed.

Before I drove away from the dealer I checked my oil as well. It was actually perfect level, surprisingly.

My buddy’s 2nd gen was overfilled when he picked it up.

With 500 miles on the truck...it HAD oil in it on delivery so that theory is done. What happened after that...who knows but I'm with OP on the not checking my oil level before a fishing trip... c'mon this isn't one of the famous Aries K cars or oil eating Subaru's or any other dinosaur fluid eating machine, it's a Taco and Taco's drip, maybe, but they don't just dry up. I'd count my blessings you noticed it, and the warning light came on. Unless your undercarriage is covered in oil I bet they start by putting some oil in and giving you back the truck. Would like an update though...

FWIW....bought a new k3500 Duramax in 2011. Drove home from dealer and put it in the pole barn. Came out in the morning and had a large puddle of engine oil under it. They came and picked it up. It was repaired and never leaked again. But I no longer take for granted new=perfect. I kinda check over new stuff now like it’s used.

I've been maintaining my problematic VW for a while, it definitely was an oversight to not check the fluids. I got used to always checking the VW before drives, but with the brand new truck I didn't think it was necessary for a 2 hour drive.

Also, I saw the dipstick was dry, and the tow truck driver also checked to confirm it. If anyone knows how to check oil it should be him

I'm all for checking fluids before a long drive, but a two hour trip in a brand new toyota didn't worry me too much

It's definitely annoying, especially far from home with work tomorrow. I guess there are worse problems to have though

I’m interested to know what they say. I still think it wasn’t filled from new but that’s just based on what you have said. If it was full and you burned that much oil in 500 miles you most likely would have seen some smoke. Same thing with a leak. You would see some evidence of it. If you dumped it on the trip then you would likely see something there also. It would be all over the under side of your truck plus you would find a loose filter or drain plug or something. Vandalism is always possible nowadays but if that was the case they probably would have drained all of it and you would have had the low pressure light as soon as you fired it up. I think either your missing something or they never filled it properly in the first place. I hope you follow up though I’m genuinely curious on what they are going to say.
