Buy a paintball gun, shoot your kids with it. Tell them to respect guns, that's how I learned! :D
Respect for elders and guns should be a priority for all kids. :p

WHOOOO-HHHHOOOOO!! I just registered to get my CHL here in Texas on June 5. I'm pretty excited getting ready to start looking for my next gun, I'm thinking about a ruger .380 but I here that the bullets are hard to come by, and that they're also very expensive any insight. BTW in case youre wondering it costs me $119 to take the course, and since I'm active duty I don't have to pay for the license fee which I guess is normally about 150.

Never "settle" on a personal defense weapon. You'll end up with the one you really want anyway, and it'll cost you in re-selling the first one, sales tax, registration fees, etc.. My choice, if I had to do a .380, would be a Kahr.

Can't buy the paintball thing. You're minimalizing the damage a gun can do. I have taught kids to respect guns by taking them to a range, setting up an apple/orange/tomato, whatever, and telling them to imagine their best friend's face on the target- then hitting it with a hollow point .45.

Please keep it secured when you do not have control of it.
Either in a safe, or cable lock type of device.
Even if YOUR kids are trained and will not play with it others may.
Hiding it is not good enough. They will find it.
Congrats .45 ACP is my favorite round.

Sorry, but I forgot I posted the thing about my kids. I keep my gun locked up in the case it came with, waiting to get a safe if I decide on a shotty, or an M4 5.56. I already have a Springfield .45 and I'm loving it, I have sent about 250 rounds through it already, and it shoots so smooth. I'm looking for the .380 just due to the size, and if I do decide to carry at any time, my Springfield is 4" but a little too big to conceal. I'm not paranoid, but I might as well use my resources while I got them, YOU NEVER KNOW.

For a small concealed unit the .38 snubbies are great.
I have a S&W 36 for those times. I use a .38 spl. Hornaday 150 grain JHP in it since it is not +P rated.

I'll look into those as well, just not too familiar with a revolver, i have always shot semi-auto.

I have had an XD40 for years and love the feel, the safty features and the look... but most of all I love that it is right next to my bed in case I ever need to unload on someone!

Welcome to the wonderful world of gun ownership. Careful it can be addictive. Another helpful way of introducing the destructive capabilities of firearms is to use milk jugs filled with colored water, always makes an impressive display. Of course when your child is mentally mature enough. Enjoy!

thats a great idea, I haven't introduced the gun to him yet, but he really wants to go the range, just using it as a ploy right now to have him act good at school and stuff, prolly wait until the summer comes. I'll rent like a .22 or something for him to shoot at the range.

When it comes to guns and kids they need education. I would definitely start them out with simple BB guns or even air soft (not an option when I was younger). Take them out shooting often and remove the curiosity / mystery a gun has to a young child.

Shooting with my dad growing up was some of my favorite times.

Good luck and congrats on your purchase.
