my first pickup: TRD Sport. How do I take console apart to install short shifter?

Hello. I just picked up my first pickup truck and I am loving it. It's a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport with a 6 speed manual transmission. I like everything about the truck except the long shifts. I purchased a URD Short Shifter kit that arrived about a week ago and I'd like to get it installed ASAP. They do provide instructions but they are for the older Tacomas. Not sure if everything would be the same which is why I am asking here. It seems pretty straight forward on the install but the most difficult part for me would probably be taking the entire console apart without breaking any clips.

    Any advice?

    Pictures attached. Thanks in advance.

Why install short shift kit on a truck? I hated mine. Make harder shifts to be shorter, but it's a truck you still can't shift fast so what's the point? Don't you want a nice smooth easy shift?

No screws. Just remove the shift knob first.

I've driven manuals my entire life and probably had 10+ manual vehicles. In my opinion the shifting isn't as precise and the throws are extremely long. It almost feels like the shifter is inside an ice bucket. I'm coming from Audis and VWs so maybe I'm just spoiled. This is the first pickup truck that I've driven with a manual. I'm not saying it's terrible but I got the short shifter to have shorter throws and precise gear engagement. We'll see if this solves the problem for me.

Yes that is the reason everyone gets a short shift. But short shifters have a down side. The shift becomes stiff and snappy and requires more effort to engage. They add performance at the expense of comfort.

The problem with that is "performance" on the truck does not exist. It's a big clunky sloppy drive train with a long clutch and even if you move the shifter quickly you will still be changing gears slowly.

So essentially you are making shifting harder for no reason. They work OK in a car but it does not translate into a truck.

Thanks for the explanation. If I don't like it then I'll just take it out.

The truck seems rugged but the shifting seems soft like it doesn't belong on the truck. I've read mostly positive reviews on these short shifters so dying to try it.

Hey man it's your truck do what you do. Just telling you my experience. 3rd gen might be slightly different as well. Reverse was a bear to put into I hated it

OP let us know how you like it. I have an auto so I can't relate but having owned multiple audis, I'm curious to see your review.

    What haven’t I changed?
I was on the fence for a few weeks after installing my short shifter. It was harder to shift, and some gears were harder to disengage than others, but now that my muscle memory has developed and I've gotten used to it I love it. True, it's still a truck and I still don't shift fast, but I also don't feel like I'm rowing a boat as I go through the gears.

Yes, you're spoiled. I too come from Audi and yeah, I wouldn't add a short throw on the Tacoma. It's supposed to shift this way and it's a pretty damn good 6speed.

    ON,
Please do what you planned to do. I'm curious to hear about your review. You already spent $$ to buy the kit so there is no reason to give up. It sounds like it's not too difficult to on & off the kit anyway. This is like even though many today's A/T cars/trucks are quicker and more fuel efficient than M/T, there are still people buying M/T because they just like feel of shifting your own gears. So, maybe stock shifter is quicker than your short shifter. But who knows you may like the feel of the short throw. I'm a die-hard M/T guy also. One time I had 3 M/T cars at the same time. I refuse to buy anything A/T. I even bought a M/T MB.

I rather like the sloppy shifter in the truck. It's actually one of the better feeling stock shifters I've owned (I'm also die hard MT guy, never owned an auto in my life)

I come from the same deal.. Audi/V-dubs... always coil overs new wheels and tires then a short shifter... right before engine rebuilds... cams etc.

I briefly considered a short shift kit for this truck but really it's pretty smooth now stock and not a terribly long throw.. you are just used to a shorter throw from your previous vehicles. I got used to the Taco shifting, changed the transmission gear oil @15K miles to see if that made a difference... still good with the way it is ... rather have the new Y pipe from URD!!

    a lot
if you feel that the shifter is too notchy, added a weighted shift knob will help with the throw.

i have a MT and it's not bad for a truck.

Maybe you had a bad install or short shifter? I installed a URD in my truck years ago (2nd gen) and while of course there is a reduction in the shift throws, I noticed no reduction in shift quality including going into reverse.
