Ha, I did that in a D50 years ago and ended up in the median. I had the lever in 4x4 but had forgotten to lock the hubs.

Nice, this on stock tires? I'm about to make the trek to Alaska in December w/stock tires and I will be bringing some chains just in case.

What are you planning to do with chains? Have you ever driven with chains on?

Wow. Never had oversteer like that in 4hi before. That’s a great case for running winter tires though.

Driving in the snow isn't so bad....

It's the months on end of grey skies and darkness that gets me.

Slow down OP and you'll be fine.

You're right, driving in it was probably the only good/fun thing that came with that 8 month long BS. 8 months of snow, 2 months of mud, 2 months of heat & humidity, wash rinse repeat. I came from the Mexico/Oswego area. Gimme dunes any day of the week!!

65 was WAAY too fast for those conditions. 4X4 made no difference at all nor did any traction control systems. Those help get you moving but have nothing to do with stopping or stability. Once you started sliding you were LUCKY to keep it between the ditches. No more, no less. And it isn't just your life you're putting in danger, but everyone else on the road.

I've driven in those exact conditions quite a bit in the past. You should have stayed behind the truck and keep your wheels in the cleared ruts. About 30-35 mph is plenty. If you had come across a long stretch of road clear in both lanes you might have been able to pass, but even with an open road ahead of you about 35 is all you need to be doing. It isn't save to try to drive in the unplowed sections of road while in traffic above 10-15 mph. Out in an open field, or empty parking lot to play around maybe, but not in traffic.

And I'd have been in 4X2.

Nope, never had. I I lived in Fairbanks AK for 3 years and I never had a chance to use them. I'm bringing them w/me just in case.

I think alot of people forget this. Not to state the obvious, but slick roads not only make it difficult to get going, but also deny you the friction you need to effectively steer and to stop in a controlled manner.

Glad you're okay buddy - I think if you'd side swiped that pole you would have gone spinning and into who knows what. Take it easy and think about how difficult it'd be for you to stop if you needed to.

Well, you'll certainly have a lot of time to think about how terrible and loud they are driving along at 30mph all the way to AK.

I would think investing in some winter tires would put you in way better shape. Plus you'll probably want them for Alaska too..
