Yup. 4 high with 4 wd at higher speeds on slippery roads is literally asking for loss of control. They have no center differential. With front and rear forced to travel at the same speed, any sudden turns can be a night mare.

It depends upon your speed. Fwd is popular because any truck on snow at higher speeds is asking for trouble. I don’t drive higher then 40-45 in 4wd in snow. Higher speeds are for awd and 2wd.
Fwd tracks the best at higher speeds, just don’t expect them to do anything but plow under power and be ready to get off the gas quicker for direction changes.

Really, any slippery driving is more about tires and weight balance then anything else. Deep soft treads and narrow profile and added weight in the back for trucks work best for winter.

I haven’t driven on ice at highway speeds very much? Weird. I’ll remember that on my 60 mile round trip to work every day. lol.

Exactly. While engine braking can control speeds in some snow conditions, a patch of ice can be a nightmare. You can spin like a top with the locked center diff.

Driving to conditions, not speed limit... is a strange concept to people. I don’t care how slow I need to go to keep my 8-10 second distance from the yahoo in front of me. Lived here since I was four lol.

    Ha ha
25 years ago when we moved into our Home on the lake on the side of a mountain in snow country with a 2 mile dirt road, it took us one week to become “experts.” Once frost hits dirt roads, it’s ice under snow the rest of the season till the thaw hits.
The list of what “sucks” in winter includes all season tires, too wide tires, poor weight balance, fwd and not careful engine braking.

100% spot on. Our road iced up so badly once trying to get in, only ice chains could do it. They were at my house, so we spent the night at a motel. That’s “ not driving at all” for conditions.

This! Once you are in 4WD, there is no speed limit.

Exactly right. This is what VSC does... keeps you going the direction you intend.

Good advise, in areas where palm trees line the roads.

Common sense used to be a lot more common. Darwin eventually sorts 'em out.

just too fast.... Tractor trailers are roughly 80 feet and it took you 3 seconds to pass him so you were doing about 20 mile over his speed. He didnt look like he was going slow either.

i get being impatient and i do agressive driving moves when conditions allow..... but conditions must allow. Im not willing to wreck my truck or car because i couldnt stand being behind a car or truck

    Absolute truth

True. But I just don't want to be part of the collateral damage when someone decides common sense is an option and not a requirement

But ultimately it can't overcome the laws of physics. OP was lucky...as were the people around him

Yeah you gotta be careful with 4WD at high speed. Things can get really interesting without a center diff to split up power.

Up here they’re called winter tires not snow tires because it’s not just about traction. They have a softer composition to grip on ice.

Next time someone asks the difference between 4wd and awd, link this thread.
