My four-wheel drive has stopped working, does this need to be fixed or can I just leave it as a 2wd?

What about checking the vacuum hose on top of the transfer case? Mine was splitting and I had a hard time actuating the 4wd.
I have had no issues switching to 4wd since over-filling each transfer case/differential with Lucas gear oil.
