I live in SoCal which is pretty hilly and my commute results in a few hill climbs/descents everyday. My driving is 60% highway, 20% city and 20% stop/go commute stuff on the highway. Here's my big takeaways on 3rd Gen taco mileage without being too verbose:

    • Drive the truck any way I want, don't care for speed, 7-10MPH over speeding on highway, just driving it without paying any regards, AC blaring - 17-18MPG consistently
    • Hold speed limit, careful driving, thoughtful of mileage, AC blaring - 20-21MPG consistently
    • Hold speed limit, careful driving, thoughtful of mileage, NO AC - 22-23MPG consistently
    • 265/75R16s over 265/70R16s on stock rims didn't make much difference, maybe 1MPG after calculating the difference (4% more OD)
    If I drive however I want and DGAF, 17MPG @ 20k miles/year = 1176 gallons @ $3.50/ea = $4,117 annual fuel cost.

    If I drive carefully, mix AC on/off at speed limit, 22MPG @ 20k miles/year = 909 gallons @ $3.50/ea = $3,181 annual fuel cost. I can save $78/mo if I drive like this.

    Great write-up. I drive however I want.
    • 40 mph around town
    • 0-5 mph over on highway
    • somewhat fast off the line at a stoplight - but not flooring it
    • a/c whatever it needs to be - I'm in Oklahoma and it's hot right now
I think I've averaged 17 mpg through my 15k miles so far.

But think of the opportunity cost of spending all your time driving like a granny and being hated by everyone (also being uncomfortably hot).

I get 19.4 regardless of how or where I drive. Highway, get 19.4. City, get 19.4. Pulled a 800lbs trailer for 120 miles, got 19.4. I just can't crack 20.

    That's actually pretty impressive lol.

    I get a solid 20 up to 21. Stock 2017 SR5 DCSB V6 4x4. I tow a 3,000lb Carolina Skiff every weekend 25 miles.

Stock wheels (16”) and tires 245/75/16.

Currently at ~9000 miles. Seems like mpg increased around 5k as well as tranny settled down.

    Never accelerate hard.
    Drive normal
    Cruise right at 60 hwy
Daily commute to work is 10miles 35% city 65% hwy.
    Always use a/c when needed.
Drive in 4hi once a week for a mile when travelling straight on hwy.

It's interesting to see how this impacts your operating costs over a full year. I would recommend you check your numbers again after a few thousand more miles. I saw a noticeable increase in fuel economy around 5k miles.

I normally average about 22-23 mpg on a tank but I am currently in St. Louis for work and on the way up here (~400 mi) I averaged 25.5 mpg while traveling 70 mph on the interstate in my DCLB 2wd. I'm pretty happy with that especially given the 15 year old 4 cylinder Accord the Tacoma replaced would have gotten about 28 on the same trip. Not bad for the added utility. The picture is of the trip summary on the second half of the drive.IMG_20180618_115506 (1).jpg

I'm getting over 21 mpg now with 91 octane non ethanol, heavier wheels/tires than stock @ 40 psi, TRD intake minus the carbon filter, 2/3 highway and moderate driving. Just hit 3000 miles and mileage has been slowly increasing into the summer with the AC on. I'm happy with that considering 20 is the highway rating on the pro.

For me the key to good milage is using cruise control all the time and keep it under 2000 rpm when cruising on the hwy..

    Great itemized report @dal3_gribble

I am always trying to maximize for MPG.

I just did a 1073mi trip to the Owyhee Canyon Lands in SE Oregon. I would say 80% Hwy and 20% offroad, I was able to average 21.9mpg on my 2015 TRD offroad AC MT 4x4 using the air conditioning whenever needed.

I have gotten 22.9 and 23 as a high point. Around town certainly is a different story, more like 16-19mpg depending.

I have a similar mix of highway, stop-and-go traffic, and hilly city areas. I set cruise control at the 70MPH speed limit whenever I can. AC on when I need it, which is frequently. I get 22-23 MPG per tank like clockwork. Stock TRDOR DCSB.

I only see lower numbers if I spend an excessive amount of time in stop-and-go traffic or when I drive up into the mountain roads.

Some day I may try the OVTune, but I'm not sure there's more efficiency to be gained if I'm already driving in the motor's highly tuned sweet spot most of the time anyway.

In my 3rd month of ownership and now with just over 3K miles, my Tacoma delivered (an astonishing) 29.5 MPG on my 21 mile commute to work one day last week. My gas tank average is now right at 25 MPG. Normal driving with the flow of traffic.

Stock mpg must be nice. I'm lucky to get above 16mpg ever.

I believe the highest I’ve gotten so far was 28.5 over a 30 mile trip. Driving carefully really increases your mpg.

All but 7 of the 21.8 miles were freeway - and the last 2.5 miles to work are up hill.
    No wind.
On this particular day the traffic was traveling at a more constant rate of speed than normal.

3 in lift, 265/70/17, trd pro wheels and i get roughly 18mpg only if im highway cruise control at 65. Before the lift and stock 265/65/17s i was getting easy 22.
