It's a high mileage problem so I'd guess it didn't really start showing up in the 05s until 08.

Some where failing at 50,000 miles. Hardly call that high mileage.

Question, if the Tacoma had 4 wheel disc brakes, would the stopping power be the same,
better or worse than the rear drums? I had a friend tell me that the drums offer greater
    stopping capability.

Exactly. So it was a few years before the problem started popping up and then enough cases came up to show it was actually a manufacturing issue.

Yet the Nissan pro4x has lower towing capacity and worse gas mileage.

I know this is beating the dead horse...
A buddy of mine worked the parts counter for Toyota for years and moved, he got a job at the counter for Nissan. He was gonna trade his Prerunner for a Frontier and his head wrench took him out in the parking lot and put him under his truck, a Frontier, and a Ranger...The dude said "look, even the Ranger is a better built truck". My buddy kept his Taco.
He also told me that that he saw 3-4 times as many Nissans come in for repair than when he was at the Toyota dealership (which was in a larger city as well).

Her Frontier Pro4x still is flawless. Would not trade and her truck suits her better. My TRD Offroad still makes kazoo noises at speed, still has a harsher rear suspension, still has more wind noise, etc. Her truck is essentially a mall crawler who only sees offroad if I get stuck and noone else is around to pull me out.

Around here you are going to only hear one side. I'm sure the frontier is a fine vehicle, but I had a TON of problems with my '03 xterra and I'm done with nissan for a while. Everyone has their own experience. :)

It came down to the frontier and Tacoma for me. My wife had a pathfinder (very similair to the fronter) a few years ago. It was reliable but the gas pedal was touchy and the car felt cheep. Plus the miliage was shit. The resale value was one of the deciding factors and I liked the look of the tacoma better. Glad I went with the Tacoma.

After reading this whole thread again lots of people keep mentioning the frame on the Nissan is better cause its fully boxed, in a way it can be true if its executed properly in this case its not better then the Tacoma frame. I observed both frames as in terms of design, I have somewhat of a passion for structural engineering, the frame of the Nissan is small in all demensions from the body monuts to the actual hieght of the frame rails and most importantly it lacks the total crossmembers the Toyota frame has making it inferior to Toyota Tacoma frame. For example you can have solid steel frame rails but when you lack crossmembers put in place properly its going to flex and not be parellel to the other side under certain conditions of the road or offroad. So case in point its boxed but not better and keep in mind the Tacoma has 8 cross members and taller and thicker frame rails
I can get into it more but id be here all day :)
Also why the Hilux has boxed frame and prado and what not and not the Tacoma??? Well the Tacoma is not considered a work horse here in the states as the Hilux is used for work across the world more then just being a DD. We have the big 3 here in the states that take up that part of the HD segment, as for the parado its an SUV its almost a must to have a boxed frame thats executed properly has it has no room to flex like a truck can with the bed being seperated from the cab, you cant afford to have frame flex in an SUV or you be craking your windshield for example

My mileage used to be the same as her Frontier. Of course with 285s on mine hers is much better. I don't know why people harp on mileage... Tacoma is AT MOST 1 mpg better.

First pickup I owned with plastic bed was an 2004 Sportrac. All others had metal beds that looked nasty after a few years. I will take my plastic bed. People that use their beds put one kind of black liner anyway.
