My grille surroundings melted.

I'm not 100% sure how this happened but the area surrounding my grille melted! Could someone help my find the part number?

This has happened before and it was never solved. Toyota mystery melt FTW

 

If I had to guess it was a window reflection, but what's odd is it was in my driveway. is it covered under warranty?

 

It's because these 3rd gens are too hot to handle

 

Probably not, but it's worth talking to your local dealer about it to see, just in case.

 

I swear someone else on TW had this covered under warranty. It's worth a try. I live in the hellish part of AZ and while that hasn't happened to me mine sometimes appears to have a very slightly curve to part of it but it's just on the cusp of being perceptible so I've never determined for sure if it's warping.

Several people have reported this and had them replaced under warranty. Push hard if your dealership balks.

I don't need the whole grill, if it is cheap enough I'm going do it myself.

 

I'd go to the dealer. It's a semi known issue.

Absolutely possible, in 2013 the window glare of a newly built London high rise was melting parts of nearby cars.

Same thing happened to my daughters Crosstrek with somewhere around 5000 miles. Subaru wouldn’t touch it.
Turns out when she was interning the building she worked at was glass outside and had one hell of an reflection. An adjuster friend looked at it and said it had happened at another hospital nearby to a bunch of cars and the hospital ended up blocking those spaces. Insurance ended up paying for it as a comprehensive claim. Her car is black as well.







The crazy thing is you could smell the melted plastic.

 

Low E Glass or other highly reflective surface nearby. Reflects lots of energy, only problem is that it has to go somewhere. Sometimes that is a surface of a car, house siding, etc.... Just wait till Karen learns about this.
