The frame isn't an open safety recall so you have to check the service history.

We just bought a single-owner 138000 mile 1998 std cab. Exactly what we wanted: 2.4L, 5 speed. Craigs List. Lots and lots of people called the owner. We were the first ones there and 20 minutes later we had a deposit down. Snooze/lose is the story for Tacoma's in really good shape and a reasonable price. 12 hours later we were driving it home.

I have a 2003 trd almost perfect shape (body some scratches) with 66000 miles and service done on the "overkill" toyota schedule. i stole it for 8500 canadian last summer. In march i hit black ice and hit 2 vehicles and did 8000 damage. I was heartbroken as i thought it was a writeoff. It got even worse when i tried to find a replacement for anywhere near the price i got it for. No dice. Fortunately it was valued at 13500 by insurance and it was fixed, all new panels, hood, even redid the front end while they were at it as my tie rod ends were frozen when they went to align...and rebuilt my custom trd grill from scratch!

I have much more appreciation for my taco now!
