Update on my stuck 1996 5 speed ignition lock. I hope this helps people.
    1) sprayed WD40 and was amazed it fixed the lock. But only for 1 day. I pulled the key out and when I tried again the damn thing was stuck again.

    2) I made it to work and left the key in "acc" position for 4 hours. Then at lunch I went out and started the car to make sure the battery wasn't dead. Then I went back to work for the next 4 hours. I'll take a Dann dead battery over a stuck key that won't turn over.
    3) NAPA sold me a lock today for $45. Yes, I can get one on Amazon for $15. But dud you know there are 2 different ignition locks for 1996? One for tilt wheel and one for standard wheel. If you look at Amazon all they do is specify the year. I'm so darn glad I didn't have my dash torn apart only to find Amazon sent the wrong lock, and then I would have to put the broken lock back in a pray it would work.
    4) The NAPA lock I got came in a NAPA box, but is a Echlin brand. I've never heard of Echlin, are they good.
Tomorrow I'm going to try to pull this lock that's been stuck in place for 28 years. YouTube makes it look easy. Any advice if the darn thing is stuck, there is no room to use tools there.?

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions

My Taco is doing the exact same thing right now. Crazy but when it does this, I pull the key out and reverse it, push it in, and about 95% of the time, it works! I really think a LOT of this problem is associated with our ignition keys getting worn out to the point that the "teeth" are not actuating the tumblers in the switch.

Can you get it to release by gently moving the wheel side to side while wiggling / turning the key?

Hey I tried WD40 and got it working now. NAPA has a replacement for $45. And Amazon has a Dorman brand for $26, but it does not specify if it's for tilt steering or not.

I've had this issue from time to time and it was the auto shifter not "fully" in park. The transmission would be in park but the shift lever wouldn't have clicked whatever mechanism frees the key from the cylinder. If you give the shift lever a firm push into park you may get that satisfying click.

This ^^^^ if it is an automatic trans. The shifter bushings need to be replaced. Driveway job, maybe 2 hrs if you have the tools, 40 minutes if you have done it before.

Some WD40 got the key moving. I got a new ignition to install this weekend. I found out not all 1st Gen locks are the same. The tilt wheel is different from the standard wheel. You tube videos make it seem like a 10 minute job. But my.loch has been in there for 28 years. I hope it's not stck
