so i was driving to work today and i hear a big thump on my right front wheel well and it then happened again so i pull over to see whats wrong with my baby and the mud guard was hanging on by a small piece on the top. It was ripped clean where the actual guard part is connected to the bracket part and i looked at the other front guard and it was cracking in the same spot. Has this happened to anyone else? Also does anyone have a set to sell or know a good aftermarket brand that looks the same as OEM?

Yes, the biggest fail on the Second Gen. Taco is the mud flaps (too long and they are made of hard plastic instead of flexible rubber)! The weight of mud alone will rip them off if your off roading doesn't pinch them off when your tires drop into ruts.

I kept trying to save them on my '05... I took them off my '10 before our first big off road trip. My '01 never had an issue with them... flexible rubber.

First mod I did - as soon as I got home I took them off, and sold them on E-bay for $150. If they do not fall off, sometimes they will "tear off" creating damage to the truck...

The front mudflaps are such an eyesore IMO. I know they help protect against rocks and tar, but as soon as I heard them touch the ground I took them off.

Just take 'em off. It was the easiest "mod" I ever did to my Tacoma and it made it look better. They really don't provide as much protection as you think, and the truck actually looks beefier without them.

I heard that thump a few times my last time coming back from Texas. I ended up stopping at a gas station and walked around and didn't notice anything wrong. Finished up my drive back to AR and didn't notice two of the flaps missing till I washed the truck a few days later. I just took the other two off. Been meaning to buy some of the softer rubber ones but just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe when I get back home next year. Anyone have any suggestions for descent soft rubber flaps?

Actually the flaps provide alot of protection. I drive alot on gravel roads and the inside of the flaps are beat to hell but the rocker panel still looks pretty much new with minimal paint chip damage.

I think you're better with using a long piece of round metal extending downward, attached at the top by 1 bold and a rivet or something at the bottom. I think you'll need more holes than surface area to minimize them bending back. Please disregard my MS paint skills
