So my muffler exploded on this “new to me” 01 sr5 Tacoma I just got. I know that’s typically a sign of a timing jump but I’m trying to figure out if there could be any other reasons for this. It runs excellent and doesn’t seem out of time so I’m racking my brain. Are there any other weird happenings out of a 3.4 that could cause this?

I found my "new" gibson exaust is now garbage after just less than 4 years. completely rotted out and fell off at the rear inlet pipe flange on the muffler. I thought this was odd considering it felt substantually better/thicker than the stock exaust it replaced. Maybe 35k miles on it....maybe.....light city and freeway driving. Not sure what im going to do now. $400+ is a shitload of money for something that only lasts 4 years. At this point though im not sure what my other options are. Gonna wait until it dries up a bit outside and then see if there is any hope for repairing it.

Timing jumped causing your muffler to explode? Never heard of this before, your truck will be the first. Post some picture of your blown to pieces muffler....

Running rich left a pool of fuel in the muffler?

Someone put a potato in your tailpipe.

Or the guts of your converter and/or muffler rotted away and worked their way into blocking the outlet side of your already rotted carcass.

A visit to a muffler shop is in order.

And look for an OE piece that someone on here wants to toss in favor of a Gibson.

My friend and I mushroomed out the muffler on his Dodge Omni cause it would always backfire on down shifts, he tried it on the freeway and it blew up cutting his rear tire.

We bought the Bosal system from RockAuto. No welding or clamps required. Just bolts right in. My wife likes it (her truck) but I think it is a little too loud for me at highway speeds.

Just make sure you get the correct one - check Bosal’s online catalog and your emissions sticker.

I wonder if the OP meant his Muffler just let go.

With a 2.7 if one cylinder was dumping raw fuel you would feel it for sure

If it was a timing failure along the road you would sit in most cases.

That was the last muffler I got for my 2.7. A little louder than stock but still nice and mellow. Better quality compared to Walker which rusted out and failed less than a year after purchase.

Bolded for truth. Any recent flashing CELs? If this were the case, I would be concerned about the catalytic converter(s).
