I gave up on our 2015 Frontier access cab V6 because of the turning ratio and the steering which was stiff enough to make my gimpy shoulders even worse. The engine had plenty of power, however. My previous Tacoma was a 2006 with the 4 cylinder and I drove it for 7 years with no regrets. We never tow anything and never loaded it up with a lot of weight. When I shopped for a replacement locally, there were none on the lot that I wanted so they found one in Tacoma, Washington. I have read a few reviews of the new V6 and it is generally praised over the 4 which no one seems to like. I have driven the new 4 at highway speeds and I see no real problem, once again. So....what do you guys think of the two engine options?

The 3rd gen Tacoma V6 is coarse sounding and unrefined even at idle - a far cry from the silky, buttery Toyota Pickup V6's of the past. Worse, the 3rd gen Tacoma V6 is gutless - feels like the ignition timing and spark advance curve are retarded and so a relatively heavy foot on the throttle is needed to accelerate to highway speeds and even to maintain speed.

Thanks. I so much like our new truck over the Frontier which was noisier and had a stiffer ride, no doubt aided by the larger tires of the Nissan. I just never liked it very much.

I went from an 09 4 banger, which I loved, but was under powered when towing or loaded to go to camp. Needed a double cab so we Got a17 v6, manual trans and love it.

This is not my opinion. I really like the V6 on my 2017. Quiet, powerful, sounds good and with the ETC setting on, it's on steroids.
Maybe this guy came from a Porshe 911 S twin turbo, or he simply doesn't like his truck. If I would feel that way you do, I would sell it and move on.
Noticed that he just happen to join the forum today? Probably a Ridgeline owner.

From a member (ridgeliner troll) with one post, LOL.
The new V6 beats the old 6 by 50hp and a whopping 45 seconds in the uphill gauntlet towing competition. Old 6 couldn't keep up.
New engine puts you back in the seat, more so than the old 6 at the higher rpm.
When it runs in the higher rpms it sounds awesome !
I have 0 problems keeping up highway speeds. Is this post a joke or something ?
    Case closed.
    Buttery ?

The only advantage the 4 has over the 6 is price. The fuel economy is similar but you get more power out of the 6 for the same fuel economy.

While I prefer the V6 the 2.7 is a great power plant. As others have mentioned there isn't much of an improvement over the V6's mpg but it will cost a bit less upfront. Not sure how it might affect resale down the road but there does seem to be a loyal group of 2.7 owners.

I did not intend to begin a pissing match nor do I consider myself to be a troll. I am 71 and I mostly need a truck to go to Lowes or Home Depot. Not to mention hauling my stuff to the rifle range. (I am going to buy another tonneau cover) The 4 cyl. 2006 Tacoma ran for 7 years flawlessly. Prior to that I owned an awful 2003 Chevrolet S10 V6 which proved to be an awful truck mechanically.
    John

I want to stress that the 2015 Frontier had an awful (in my opinion) turning ratio and a very stiff steering problem for my gimpy, ruined shoulders. We were also not very deep in our payments on the Nissan so we thought buying the 4 might save us money per month. The new truck was instantly better. Facing total shoulder replacement on the left shoulder and rotator cuff repairs on the other is not a good thing to think about.

You made the right choice. The V6 beats the 2.7L in idiotic off the line acceleration which seems to be really important around here. otherwise the 2.7L is great especially for your needs.

And the 2015+ 2.7 L is dual vvti where it used to be single. some say it has more power than the previous models.

The 2.7L is more reliable, dependable , proven, cheaper and easier to maintain.

Look at all the issues the 3.5L is having. Do you have a couple spare Saturdays to spend sitting in Toyota show room drinking crappy stale coffee while they try to fix your truck?

The 2003 S10 at about 38,000 miles had the universal joint come apart. The dealer didn't want to pay for it as that was beyond the 36,000 plateau. I had an extended warranty and they were very slow to want to repair it. I ended up doing some telephone networking and final got to someone at GM in Michigan to drop a dime and the truck was repaired but only after two tries by two mechanics. The repairs were completed and I promptly bought the '06 Tacoma.
