lol. Is your truck Cali emissions (sticker on door) I'm pretty sure only cali trucks had the A/F 1 and O2 2. Pretty sure Fed trucks are both O2

Well after 120 miles the CEL is back on...gonna replace the ECT.

Also noticed some puddles on the pavement...looks like i'm gonna need a new axle and axle seal sooner than later.

Where is the fill plug on these differentials? Gonna try and top it off for awhile until I get time to change it out.

that almost looked like coolant for a minute, but I can see it looks like it's dripping from the CV seal

the "fill" is up above the drain about 6 inches. It should be a 10 or 12 mm allen (some people have switched out for the Lexus Hex bolt)

One other questions...I cleared the CEL by disconnecting the battery cable...if it's a permanent code on these trucks will the battery trick work or will a scanner actually have to clear it?

now..the truck has a header and only one cat on it...could be the issues... the new front 02 I just replaced is a denso

With the mileage it has it's likely you have a bad cat, if it was run too lean or too rich for too long that will kill them quick. Hard to say.

Check for leaks in the exhaust from the headers to the rear O2 sensor, any leaks can trip that code as well.

Bang on the cat with a rubber mallet and see if you hear any rattling

Some of the pre 2000 or 2001 1st gens only had 1 cat, not all of them had 2. Depended on whether or not they were CA emission trucks or just federal ones.

Post 2000/2001 they were all made to CA emissions spec

The rear o2 is the sensor that monitors cat converter efficiency so it's the one telling you there's a P0420 code, likely because the cat isn't doing its job anymore but could also be because its detecting an improper air/fuel mix due to a leak in the exhaust.

I did have to leave the gasket that goes in between the sensor and the exhaust pipe off for now. The bolts would not tighten up with the gasket on there for some reason, gonna get some new bolts and put the gasket in and see what happens.

That could be it, if there's no proper seal there without the gasket then it could be a big enough leak to trip the code.

yep, any leak is enough to trip it. I had one for a couple of years since I did not need emissions but switched Reg to new house that needs emissions. So I replaced 2nd CAT all the way back and then still had to replace my O2 sensor due to incorrect readings. I'm thinking I left it too long reading incorrectly and it finally went bad. I also mainly replaced exhaust cause I hated the hissing noise from the leaks :/

I think the previous owner is feeling happy to have sold it for $2500 with all these codes and leaks. Nothing that can't be addressed, but he sure wasn't going to do it.
