What gauge/thickness is the drop bracket? Is it thicker than the 3/16" steel used in the AP bumper center section (which mounts the winch and takes the brunt of scrapes on approach angles)?

Slightly untrue. While you can switch to a Hawse fairlead, it's not as good as a roller.

The reason you can't use a Hawse fairlead with a wire rope is because the friction will either burn up the cable or cut through the Hawse. In the case of synthetic, you still create friction by rubbing the Hawse, which results in damaged line over time.

There is also the misconception that roller fairleads are bad for synthetic line because it can bind the rope in the corners of the fairlead.
Firstly, the situations where you are pulling at that angle are rare.
Secondly, if you are attempting to pull at that angle, you should reassess your stuck situation. That is an extreme angle, which is hard on the winch and line (no matter what material) and should be avoided. Re-rig or use a different tool.
Thirdly, people have performed this sort of recovery with synthetic under dire situations, and have reported that they were able to complete the maneuver with success.

The thing to watch out for on roller fairleads is burrs or other imperfections that could harm the synthetic line. In the OP's situation, he should asses the quality of the fairlead and determine if a new fairlead is necessary.

The ultimate solution is to use synthetic line with a delrin roller fairlead.
    -roller fairlead eliminates friction
-delrin reduces weight (marginally in the grand scheme of things)
    -delrin can't harm synthetic line

however, delrin is big money :(

Sure, Hawse may look good, but performance > pretty when you want to be serious.

:confused:I didn't have any problem. Set the winch to freespool and start pulling. Spooling back up is what sucks.

I agree with the folks that say to ditch the rear blocks. Get a good leaf pack!

For those who want him to ditch the AP bumpers - I don't think it matters. He's just going hunting, not wheeling. I'd bitch him out if he was the one putting them on, but he bought it that way and at least it's going to be much better than stock.

That is like THE song people play at the bar in Eastern North Carolina at last call. Saw your profile, Pitt County eh? Im an ECU alum/DJ, just did a wedding in Raleigh and had that song requested like 10 times. Dixieland delight is another one.

Cool truck OP, welcome to TW!

so the moon roofs just pop up a couple inches on the back side right? could you take the glass windows off the mounts and have like and open cab? nasty truck man!

    edit;
anyone have an idea for how much something like the dual moon roofs would cost? maybe ones with a cover too for some occasional shade
