I've done too many miles in various Nissans over the years... 4 Maximas, a 300zx, 2 Pathfinders... Loved them all and I love my current 300zx

But I haven't owned an Nissan with a VQ40 yet so no real help here I'm afraid, I know the VQ35s use to have the chain tensioners get sludgy oil passages and an engine flush was recommended or lots of short oil change intervals with low viscosity to clean it out.

Do the headlights flare when revving?

As far as I can tell the lights don't flare when revving.

On my Nissan it was the belt idler pulley that was toast and making noise

So I'm totally curious, are you on here because you're from Tacoma, WA or something. Because if so, hello fellow Washingtonian. I know a lot of the Nissan forums are ghost towns so it's no biggie that you're here, I'm just afraid we won't have many great answers for you.

    @Karma Nv

Thread’s been moved to general automotive. Might get more attention here vice a specific gen sub forum.

I don’t know much about those engines so I may not be of much help but...pulleys?

I'm from Florida. I'll admit I'm not mechinally inclined as most of you are so I figured I'd get some advice from here.

Thank you I wasn't sure where to put the fourm. The pulleys dont shake badly and I've had the engine on so I can visually see or hear anything irregular happening. Honestly it could be the pulleys but I'm not sure.

If the truck runs well I’m thinking something on the exhaust but I’d still like to see new plugs installed. Edit: pulleys shake? Hmmm. Is it the tensioner pulley?

I’ll admit, I don’t know much about Nissan’s but I’m thinking pulleys/bearings in either the idler or tensioner pulleys.

@Karma Nv if you’ve got video, I’m sure others more mechanically inclined would like to see it to help diagnose.

Have you tried the screwdriver to the ear?

The handle end at your ear and the tool end against the suspected part? The sound will travel up the screwdriver and be amplified when you're on the offending part. I used that and tracked down a noisey waterpump that way years ago.

Just put the end on a nonmoving housing!!!

No worries, just didn’t want to see a bunch of people jumping on you for posting on a toyota forum. Rather see you get help than chastised.

I got the vehicle with about 148,??? Miles. I got my first oil change at 148,337 miles. My second oil change was at 152,140 miles. I went over the 3750 oil change interval a little bit. It's ran well within those miles so far. Perhaps I could ask about my spark plugs when I get my tires rotated in a few days?

Ok. Id change the tensioner pulley now for $30 or you can wait for it to explode and buy a complete new tensioner for $125. Then replace the other idler and have them all done for less than the cost of a single new tensioner assembly. I learned this the hard way; change the belt tensioner pulley before it explodes and save 100 bucks

When I worked at nissan I would remove the belts to be damn sure, but more than likely its the timing chain guide worn through.

I asked the previous owner if the timing chain had been replaced. He said he thinks so, but he's not sure. He said that Nissan would have to check to see if it had been serviced. The owner had taken this vehicle to the same dealership for service and he said that they loved seeing it. But I've come to conclusion that the timing chain is the problem.
