I'm pretty new to off roading myself. It's super fun. I never thought it would as much fun as it it.
I just got my 2003 Tacoma about a year and a half ago and had similar tires. I had 265 70 R16 General Grabber AW's. I used them off road and on gravel roads until they were pretty torn up and I'd gotten 2 flats. It's amazing what a normal tire can do if you air it down a bunch.

Sounds to me like you did pretty good on your first run ever.

Also sounds like you're a better driver than you realize. You actually got out of the truck and walked the rough sections of the trail, knew when to quit, and actually spent some time studying the joys of 4LO in reverse. :headbang:

As others have mentioned, just the one spare tire. And a tire repair kit, the kind that come with the means to suture up a sidewall tear.

Solo vehicles are another matter. I hit the backcountry by myself all the time, but I know what I'm doing, and I leave word with people who care where I'll be and when I'll be back. Even then, it puts me at much more risk than froading with other vehicles, for all the obvious reasons.

Plus, at your level of experience, you can learn alot from other folks, even those who don't know what they're up to! :D

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm going on my third trip this weekend. Two trucks this time. We are going to do an overnight on the Mojave Road Pass near the New York Mountains. Should be fun. I'll post an update later.
