I'd go with a true dual band / dual VFO. (Yaesu 8800 / FTM350R or Kenwood TM-V71A / TM-D710) If you're wheeling with folks talking on a trail simplex frequency, you can have a base camp simplex or local repeater frequency on the other side. Or, you can have other trail groups or repeaters in a group and scan that group while monitoring a dedicated simplex frequency on your primary VFO. I ran that setup out in Moab this past spring and really liked being able to monitor both, or scan the other trail groups and talk with friends on other trails. Cross band repeat is also kinda nice around camp.

Highly recommend using a Blend Mount for the face:

I just stumbled across this site and thread, and Tacovendor, man you have had me frothing with all your adjustments. That is simply amazing and motivating. So, I was wondering why a 4 cylinder instead of a V6? Can the same adjustments be made with a V6? I imagine so, but thought I'd ask.
Also, what is meant by re-gearing the truck? Do you think that would have to be done with a v6?

I've been looking into the 2012 V6 4x4 Access Tacoma and then saw your thread. Now I have found a way to remove the ugly fender of the 2012 and make it more functional thanks to your thread. Alas, I currently live outside of DC and wouldn't know where to go once I get the truck. Any advice, input etc.?

Again great build, by any chance would you mind posting some pics of the snorkel air box connection that you ended up going with seems to be very limited info on the 4bangers running a Safari snorkel. Thanks in advance.

The regular cab in not available with the six cylider, I also wanted to build a truck on the cheapest 4X4 Tacoma available so there was more funds available for mods. The truck sells for around 20K. The V6 has much more power so changing the gearing isn't as necessary as with the 4cyl.

I can try to post more, it's just that all of the connections are not visible. If you are or know a fabricator, you could cut the connection off of the snorkle and fabricate a new one in the right location(side note: the snorkle is not designed for the Tacoma so you have to make adjustments). The 6cyl is alot easier due to the airbox location, on mine(4cyl) I had to used PVC pipe to make it work.

I recently was a instructor at remote rescue class at the Overland Rally in Hollister CA and used it to roll and right this Jeep and it worked flawlessly!

That is what I was wondering about on the 4 cyl, everything I have read and looked at pics of has been V6. I have a 4cyl as well and read where you commented on the connection. I'm sure I can get it all to work just curious about how much I would have to fabricate/cut/improvise. Thanks for the info.

On my install I didn't mod the snorkle and the only thing that I removed was the stock (in the fender intake) and the tube that went from it to the airbox. I had to remove a small amount of plastic with sandpaper inside the airbox to accomodate the PVC pipe.

The Generals are OK, they have a heavy sidewall and a lot of road noise. Great off road traction, they remind me of the BFG Baja T/A

Got my new sleeping accommodations today, a Howling Moon Safari Dome tent from South Africa. Thing is like a canvas fortress! I can't wait to get out and use it.
