My RPMs fluctuate while idling

The Sport already has 17 inch wheels. I would not go bigger. Bigger looks like a toy and gives less side wall therefore a rougher ride. 17 is as big as I'd like and I might rather have 16.


As far as your original question.... The AC compressor comes on when you have the climate control set to AC or Defrost. The AC compressor catches and increases load on the engine and the engine is set up to "speed up" from idle to compensate for the additional load.

 

It came with 16 inch wheels as for the rpm situation I notice it with no ac or heat on as well.

It all depends on engine load (and egine temperature). It'll run higher RPMs to get to operating temp, and will fluctuate as you drive accessories such as AC compressor, heater, power steering, etc. RPMs go up to drive the accessory.

Some complain about the truck lunging forward, so beware. The RPM surge will make the truck move/lurch as you turn the wheel to park or when operating at low speeds. I've gotten used to it and actually sometimes turn the wheel a tiny bit to get an extra surge while parking.

Did you purchase it new and stock? If so, it should be 17" on the Sport. The Off Road got the 16".

What did you find out on yours?

As for the RPM fluctuations during idle, some of it might be attributed to D-4S

 

They all bump up the RPM when you (even slightly) turn/touch the steering wheel. It does this steering bump-up when the truck is in drive or reverse (I no nothing of the man. trannies). The problem is that some jump up 100-200 rpm. Mine is one of the "lurchers" (about 150-175/RPM's). I have started 2 other (brand new) tacomas and they also bump up --except it feels slight and it seems to be only about 50 RPMS or so. If you have what I call a lurcher -- you will know it.
My son-in-law ( a certified FAA aircraft mechanic (a&P license)), is now afraid to park my truck in his hanger , where he works on 2-4 million dollar jets. He did so once earlier this year and said he did not want "that spastic" truck being moved around in his maintenance hanger for fear the truck may lurch into an aircraft with a operator who may not be used to the trucks characteristics.
Toyota has a case open on my truck, and in fact the Toyota area rep is the one who pinpointed the "cause" of the surging
