    1. Someone did not latch my small 4 wheeler trailer's hitch correctly and it jumped up and hit my tailgate....
    2. I've never really liked the fact that there was paint between the tailgate and the top of the bed. This is where I grab it to shut it and I was always worrying about scratching it. Most trucks fill this area with plastic.
    3. Had some grip tape for dirt bike frames laying around, so I did this.

    How did I do?

You did good, fixed the problem and looks good. I agree with you on the painted area. Where do you get that material?

I would have thought that was Line-X

Looks good, a little Nissan like but that's not a bad thing.

Did the trick while giving you a nice pad to push the tailgate up with!

There is no real proper spot to put your hand without it being all over the paint.

Looks good, though it also now looks like you slapped a nissan tailgate on your tacoma.

    Looks good.
I used a rectangle of 3M paint film in that area to protect the paint. With your new scratch, the black material seems like a great option to accomplish both. Now black TACOMA inserts are a must;).

I give you credit on the repair, cheap way to repair the damage. Are you taking responsibility when you say 'someone' didn't latch it correctly?

Any skateshop will sell you a 9x33” sheet for less than $10. Brand name is better than budget brands.
Black magic, jessup and Mob (perforated to avoid air bubbles) all produce grip tape exclusively and have nasty grit.
Shop local if you can, but if not any mall shop that sells skateboards will have what you’re looking for
