d let him join. Take it from me, I'm 20 and Let him do what he wants. I wanted to work on cars and race instead of college. Well my mom "made" me go to college. Now I hate everyday I work part time, have no money for anything, I drive 150 miles a day. And guess what... I don't really like any of the degrees. I just want to do something with racing. It was college, or get kicked out for me. That's no way to parent.

Sit down with your parents and let them know that you are quiting college getting a full time job and moving out in six months. Once you have moved out and you are self sustaining then my friend race your ass off. Just because you are over 18 and considered and adult doesn't really mean that you are. Don't worry about being an adult instead become a man. A man that stands on his own two feet and is not dependent on anyone to provide him a roof over his head warmth in the winter or ac in the summer nor food in his belly. Don't be upset at your parents they are not controlling you they just gave you a choice. A choice to become a man or go to college and continue to live at home. Look at it this way you will be a race car driver with a college degree. PS I didn't go to college I was married at 18 and on our own at the same time. Just celebrated our 25 year anniversary two kids the oldest is graduating on 19th from the UofA. Listen to mom and dad. They only want what is best for you. When you are older and have kids you will look back and tell your kids how grandma and grandpa made you go to school.

Yeah. Its hard to grind through school when you dont like it. My grades aren't bad. I just hate it. I'm 3 years in, over 70% complete, so I might as well get the peice of paper. I'm in it for civil engineering. When I graduate its make money, and get my competition license and go from there. I do pay for my own school.

You are on the home stretch. It will pay off in the long run. Trust me you will thank your parents for making you go. Always having money in your pocket makes life easy.

I know. The grind sucks. A day I go to class, I spend around 5 hours in my truck with work and going to school! Guess it'll come in handy one day. And OP my brother chose the army and he is an MP in the national guard, and a cop in the civilian world. He doesn't make much money, but he gets a place to stay, and is very happy in life. The benefits for him are great.

I didnt read all the posts or if he joined or not but I say Let him serve...He might or might not make a career...He's young...if he makes it good for him if not its not the end of the world it just wasnt for him. There are worse things in life than joining the military.

I'd have to say its a great idea. Others have posted why; job, gain experience, a trade, a career, develop skill, confidence and responsibility. If he's going in enlisted then I'd encourage him to get a degree at some point. Enlisted fellows/gals are the backbone of the AF, but a degree will separate him from the rest even if he gets a degree after he serves. Nonetheless, I would recommend going in for too many reasons to detail here.

I am 20 and this is what I'm doing currently finishing my associates and shipping out out June 21st. I understand both sides because that's how my dad is feeling about it but honestly if he wants to and is happy I'd say let him.

When you join... please please please make sure that you pick a field that will help you get a job after your enlistment... nurses, medical techs, telecom, electricians, welders, computer stuff .. they do well... office admins, military police jobs not so good unless you go in for 20+ years.

Or... be sure to get a college degree while you're serving. I did 23 years and my second career is not related at all to my military specialty but having the degree was my key to a lucrative career after the military.

Very true, I was an electrician in the Airforce but completed my bachelors in MIS 7 months after ending my 4 year enlistment. I do use my electrical skills every once in a while.

I knew some MPs that did not do well but that does not mean all, it was just harder for them to get police work on the outside. I also know of some that did really good like your brother. It is just easier if you get into a field that is in demand in the civilian world.

If you want to be a police officer after the USAF, it's best to go in as a Law Enforcement Specialist, that field relates more to police work than the Security Police job.

Two tours, 7 years in Germany. Germany is a nice place to live but the best part is how easy it is to travel all over Europe from there. What a great benefit of serving.
