I agree, once he has a degree he can join if He still wants too, but he needs to get degree first. After he has a degree it's all his choice.
Personally am against working for any government, but if he wants to then that's his choice.

I agree with this. He met you in the middle.

He's going to college for you and himself, and later he'll do his choice.

Some help, some scholarship because his grades, and some loan. His degree will easily land him a job with good money, plus he can always be creative and make his own way.

F the Air force have him join the Marines.
    :infantry:

Now that you gave that statement some thought the Air Force is a great choice isn't it.
Don't get upset a bout my initial statement my Air Force brothers. It was just made to prove a point. I love the Air force and the Navy. They provided me and my Misguided Marines transportation to foreing lands to cause havoc and destruction in the name of freedom. MURICA FUCK YEAH. :oldglory:

It seems to me you have charted his path for him. As a parent myself I believe you have to provide a child with various positive options in life and let the kid make the choice. Because in the end it will be the kid that will have to live with those choices and not you. I exposed my son to many positive activities including the military but he made the choice as to what he wanted to do with his life and as a parent I supported him. He just graduated with his masters in computer science and has had to turn down many job offers in private and government. He just accepted an offer with a top defense contractor in California and they really rolled out the red carpet for him. The point I am trying to make is I never pushed him toward this direction I just introduced him to a wide variety of things when he was very young and he determined what he wanted to do

Actually he was the one that wanted to go towards Computer Science. He wanted to do army first than school. I disagreed with that, and want him to get degree first. Just change of order. I think getting education first is better because it's easier, being fresh from high school. I think now he sees I was right. CSE is very hard, with kids dropping out every semester. I can't imagine doing that after couple years from schools.

I tried college after high school and I couldn't stand it. I quit school, worked a little then decided to join the service. With all the options available to you to help pay for school it was a no brainer. We get tuition assistance, the G.I Bill and grants as well as advanced education opportunities, we have a program where you can go to school full time for 2 years. That's tight, your fil time job is school for 2 years. One of my friends is working on his second masters degree as I type this.

Pretty much when I said I was joining the military my folks said they wished me the best of luck. No argument or "do this or that instead". I appreciated the ability to choose my own course in life.

Exactly. There is a big..big...big world out there and there are many ways and roads to travel to become successful in life. I think when people walk down the path of life with a closed mind or a narrow point of view they miss out on so much life has to offer. I like you pretty much did the same thing. At 18 college was not for me at that time. I joined the military and my whole world opened up. The military teaches you about life in general and college serves as a platform for teaching you theories about subject matter. Personally, I think all kids should be required to serve at least two years in the military and then on to college.

If Air Force is the decision that comes to mind in the end Pm me and I can give you some insight. I enlisted after 2 years of marriage and fixed jets for 6 years. The Air Force paid for my degree and I commissioned. I was a navigator for 3 years and now a pilot. I deploy a lot but it has been a good 13 years so far. It's not for everyone but if it's for your son I may be able to give you both some info and piece of mind. All branches are great, but the Air Force tends to stay in more hotels vs. tents when compared to the other guys.

Those other guys being me. We did some joint ops with the Air force in Alamogordo New Mexico. Our billeting was messed up so we checked out some tents (20) and took up residence on a baseball field near the gym. We lived like that for 5 days until we got set up Air Force stile in some nice ass rooms with house cleaning service. Yes that tone you might hear in my text is jealousy but, I am the one that signed up to be one of Uncle Sam's Missguided Children. Loved all 10 years of it would go back and doit again in heartbeat.

@BlueT I went through close to the same thing. I was in college for a year and did terrible. I sat out for a year and tried again for a semester. It wasn't for me at the time. I signed up for the Navy and not only did it give me great life experiences but it also forced me to grow up and mature. Now I am using the GI Bill to try the college thing once again and I am proud to say I will be graduating next year.
Please don't discourage your son from joining the service. It is a great avenue towards better things and also a wonderful career if that's what he choosing. Encourage him to make the best decision for him and not what you want for him.
*sidenote* the "cuts" you speak of will not affect him during the first four years of his contract. During this time he will be also be able to take classes and earn the GI Bill providing he doesn't get into any trouble.

    Hope this helps!

    Does his school have AFROTC?

He can comission and his degree paid for. Then when he graduates he's an officer with a job thats most likely cyber security related since thats what his degree will be in.

Honestly the AF is a very good resume builder when it comes to cyber security. They're the branch that does most of it, and the military is constantly dealing with cyber warfare. I can about guarantee that there is no private sector contractor that is better experience, and whenever his time is up in the AF and it's time to move on to the private sector, his resume is going to be at or near the top of the stack.

Going to help you out. It's Air Force Academy. Run it together like that on your application and they're going to send you to West Point. No offense to my Army comrades. :)
