If you want it to be cheaper to not total it, ask for aftermarket parts

Let insurance and the body shop handle it? Not sure what you're really asking.

Lucky indeed. When I was a kid (20 or so) I dozed off at the wheel coming home from my girlfriend's house at 1 or 2am, came to just milliseconds before slamming into the back of another car on the highway with just enough time to swerve and avoid it. Was barely able to correct my car but I did, still no idea how I managed it - nearly lost total control of it at freeway speed. And thankfully no one else was around me.

Count my lucky stars to this day and it scared the hell out of me enough to where I'll never get behind the wheel if I'm feeling remotely sleep deprived. Glad you're ok and no one else got hurt

I would let the insurance either fix it or total it, if they total it, you can always buy it back and do the repairs your self. Buy used sheet metal, buy used suspension, send the frame to a body shop to get that straightened out.

I usually buy back cars if they have been totaled, but I used to be a autobody tech, so I can fix it all my self.

idk ive heard people asking for aftermarket items and just paying the difference from the oem stealership price? get a second opinion? replace both front suspensions? just anyone who went thru this experience if they would have done anything differently.

You can get OEM used parts too, they are often cheaper than the aftermarket too. It takes a little more leg work as you have to call around to salvage yards, but you can get parts cheap.

Looks like more than $8k to me too. Maybe even twice that much depending on what’s going on underneath.

Mine was totaled a few weeks ago. Granted I had both doors damaged, but damage exceeded $15,000.
