But what about hard credit inquiries? Those stick around for two years and negatively impact credit scores, and are needed every time a credit card or loan are applied for.

You make a good point but those inquiries don't really impact your score that much. But if you are planning to buy a house in the next couple years then I agree you might not want to go this route. I check my score every month and it has barely moved more than a few points after opening three credits cards within the last year.

EDIT: also if you plan to apply for more than one card it is best to do them all on the same day, because it only shows as a single inquiry

Interesting. I regularly check my credit score and all the factors, but didn't realize that the hard inquiries were weighted that low. Good to know.

Are you sure that the dealer said they wanted to replace the whole transmission? I'm skeptical of that. A chirping sound that goes away with the clutch pushed in is a classic (and common) symptom of a throwout bearing going bad. Usually you just have to replace it with the clutch and all is well. I've had to do mine, a lot of members here have.

I'm betting that the dealer said they wanted to replace the clutch, not the transmission...$3k for a clutch job at the dealer sounds about right (overpriced but that's what they do), but way too cheap to be a transmission replacement from the dealer.

Yes, you are correct. Clutch and TOB as well as the slave cylinder for $2.3k. Thinking of taking it to the good ol' boys shop around the way for a better deal potentially. He also noted that if damage occurs when dissembling, they will have to replace both manifolds. But that would be worst case scenario.

Yeah that makes more sense. I'd definitely take it to a reputable shop other than the dealer if you can, the local Toyota dealer near me wanted nearly $3k to do my clutch, too. Local transmission shop charged less than half that. Any shop will have to drop the transmission out though to do the clutch, which is why the labor cost is so high on a clutch job.

I've also had a really bad experience getting clutch work done by a mom 'n pop shop, so be sure to do your homework on them.

Appreciate all the input here. Will do some research. Unfortunately looking to buy a house, otherwise that no interest card idea would be ideal.

Ah ok. The reason I ask is because in the Navy you can get an interest free loan no questions asked twice a year. No hard inquiry.

Or if you contribute to your TSP (retirement) you can take a loan out from that (your own money) and the minimal interest you pay, you're actually paying to yourself. You'll see that extra money in the end. Doesn't help you though. Sorry man.

Thanks for clarifying the issue, full trans vs. tob and clutch- didn't seem right to me.
Unrelated and unsolicited, beware of real estate agents trying to sell you the max your credit might approve when looking for a house...just sayin.

Oh stop with the drama. One credit card, who cares about that one hard hit on his credit. It will barely budge his fico score, if at all.

Stop with the drama? I'm bringing up legitimate concerns since it was suggested to apply for two credit cards and rollover funds, etc. It's a moot point though since OP isn't going that route.

Ah.. So after digging around he is saying new tranny. $2.7k for a tranny with 40k miles on it and new clutch since he's already in there. Other option is to have a new tranny made and shipped (2 weeks) for over $3k. I'm thinking I might pull the trigger at $2.7k. Really love my truck.

    Wait, new tranny is 3k
Used tranny with 40k miles is 2.7k?

$300 difference for 40k miles? Id go new if thats the case. Unless by "over 3k" you mean way over 3k

    Cool Story, Bro time:

I have debt. Spread across a few credit cards, student loan, auto loans, mortgage and the IRS (don't ask). Divorced last year which wasn't the worst but switching to a single income definitely stung.
Got a consolidation loan to fix the interest rate on the cc debt and have single monthly payment. That was a hard credit inquiry. Couple months later I had to do a "mortgage reassessment" to have my ex's name taken off the loan which was a process at least as involved as getting it refinanced or applying for a new mortgage. This month I applied for a home equity loan to make some improvements on my house and I was very surprised to get my Equifax FICO score above 790...

Moral of the story: If you have debt, it's not "bad" for your credit score or ability to get new lines of credit. Paying shit on time is what counts.

You're mileage obviously may vary for a brazillion factors but getting a low or zero interest credit card to pay for emergency auto repairs or health bills or whatever won't put your credit into the shitter... as long as you elect to keep up on the payments.

    /end CSB

//OP: get multiple estimates and get referrals to shops that have good reviews (check in the NW section here and you'll probably get some solid leads). Depending on what you paid for your truck, $2-3K to keep it for another 10 years is a good "investment" just based on the resale value of these things alone. I put $4k into my truck the very first 2 weeks because the entire front suspension was FUBAR and I'm very happy with that "investment".
