That's a 50 year evolution. The global architecture is happening over one design change.

I don't believe Toyota would do such a thing. It would be especially stupid.

I also do not think the "Global Architecture" is any more "global" than any other manufacturers. Who is to say they haven't got a "Global Architecture" for different product categories? I see that in my work all the time.

It is due for a redesign, but they've already announced the '19 Pro lineup, which includes the 4R. i think it's safe to say it will be around next year.

2020 is probably when the axle will fall.

Toyota's global architecture will apply across all lines. That's how they plan to save cash. It's the reason we have the 3.5 in the Tacoma, the Highlander and the Camry.

Do you have a source that states or implies that Toyota plans to move to a global architecture? Or is this your assumption?

They are already doing it. Examples are the CHR, new Camry and the new Corolla and Rav4 that will arrive soon. Go to the dealer and have a look at the CHR and the Camry. If it didn't say Toyota on it you would think it was from a different manufacturer.

Literally all that the link you listed is saying that the global models will share cores. Engines frames etc. I'll make sure and come back when the new models are announced at see where we stand

Google it. There's lots of info out there. Basically the global architecture is designed to reduce cost by sharing platforms and power trains amoung all models. This will help reduce production costs, employ less people and have smaller assembly plants. Also will make dealer technicians better at their jobs by not requiring knowledge on many different platforms and drivetrains. This is going to save Toyota billions.

Guys please stop feeding the troll.
Tnga has nothing to do with them getting rid of the 4Runner. It’s not happening.

OPs thread turns into an argument about 4runners sheesh guys. I bought a Chevy work truck brand new in 2000. It had a great 6 cylinder motor but wouldn’t stay running for more than 3 months without a tow to the dealer. Totally soured me on their product. The Dodge vehicles I’ve owned rattled alot, ran decent but terrible resale. Had a few Fords that just were average all around. Toyota and Honda vehicles have been more reliable and the resale has been the best of any of the brands I’ve owned. I’d say dump the Jeep for a Toyota or Honda minivan, keep the sports car, buy another four door Tacoma and mod it till you run out of money.

I've been reading this thread and heres my two cents... ALL manufacturers share frames and with newer technology they can use the same frame and extend it just like how Ford has the Fusion and MKZ on the "same" platform as the new Continental even though they are different sized cars. Sharing frames in the sense of Tundra and Sequoia we understand just as the Camry and Highlander did (and do?).

Why would Toyota change the 4Runner? Every single stinking generation is a "different" vehicle then its predecessor for the most part. Look at the Tundra 1st Gen vs. 2nd Gen, it was a completely different truck but does it still have cab options and a bed? Yes...

In this crossover world were evolving into, why would it make sense for Toyota to take a name that is rooted DEEP in its heritage and turn it into a crossover. Did Nissan do it with the Pathfinder? Yes but they NEEDED a full size crossover and it didn't make sense for Nissan to continue making a BOF larger SUV when they have the Armada which is more profitable and likely to fill a niche market then the Pathfinder.

The 4Runner is making over 100k sales now with an outdated everything. President Trump announced he's rolling back the new CAFE standards so I'm sure regardless the 3.5 from the Tacoma will be shared since thats already probably in planning. In reality it makes more sense for the Sequoia name to be used on something different since its only selling 12,000 some units last year.. Also wouldn't it make more sense to be making them down in Texas along side the Tundra since its the same frame, engine, transmission, etc.?

My overall take on it now that my rant is over after reading this thread that completely derailed to the 4Runner is. Is it going to stay BOF I'd bet money on it.. However will it be more "feminine" or "crossover like" it definitely could be like the new Colorado based Trailblazer is I would say. In my opinion its going to be BOF and either be VERY similar to the 3rd Gen. Tacoma OR it'll be a more rounded less masculine appearance BOF SUV like the Global Trailblazer and the Grand Cherokee (even though I know the GC isn't true BOF).

All this starter because it was suggested to the OP that he buy a 4Runner. I suggested he do it soon because it won't be what it is today and there is a good chance it will be discontinued because it doesn't follow Toyota's future plans. I considered the follow discussion as a debate but others felt it was an attack on their beliefs. My opinion is just as valid as anyone else's and a member shouldn't be labeled as a troll for expressing them. Note to self, understand the audience your preaching to.

    I'm done with this thread.

Labels suck. I would have to meet you and get to know you before making that kind of judgment. Like the old saying goes “ opinions are like assholes...everybody has one”. My opinion is that the 4runner just doesn’t work as a replacement for a tacoma. I had a new 4runner limited for about 6 months while my truck sat at the dealer waiting for the frame to be replaced. I liked the 4runner and it had its advantages but I was very happy to get my truck back.

Even with having a utility trailer for many years, every time I owned an SUV, I always wished I had a pickup truck.

Whenever I owned a truck, I never wished I had an SUV.

The versatility of a truck bed is great.

Previously owned a 1998 4Runner, 2000 Tacoma and 2002 Tundra, among several other makes of SUVs and trucks.

It's easier to get dead hooker blood out of the bed of a truck vs. carpet in the cargo area of an SUV
