My Tacoma seems to shift hard. Is that bad?

I have an 01 TRD 4wd V6 yota and it seems to shift hard usually from first to second gear. Is my tranny going? I've been pulling a trailer so I figured I might be straining the tranny. I always use the ECT when I pull the trailer. I've checked my fluids they're fine.

They're sloppy transmissions to begin with and the added 14 years of wear and tear hasn't helped. Mines a 2000 with similar issue

My 2001, 2wd, 2.4, 5 spd has never been a smooth shifter and I've had it since new (sometimes I have to double clutch), but my 1999, 4x4, 3.4, 5 spd shifts really nicely and someone else drove it for the first 180k.

Ok thank you. Guess I'll just wait until something happens. I'm putting gears in it to help pull my trailer.

make sure your fluid level is correct, and it wouldn't hurt to replace it

If you're having this issue I can practically promise a transmission is in your future, your trans has gotten hot & now probably fluid is full of "flash" & is clogging small fluid passages in valve body, I had a couple of unusually hard upshifts the day before mine totally grenaded...

Not so much sloppy but sure as hell are fussy & tempermental & need to be serviced at 35k intervals or they WILL eventually smoke themselves, I've had autos in the past I drove for years, never even checking the fluid , without issues, the A340F/A340E won't survive without required maint.

& get ready to see a bill up to $3400 for a rebuild....

    You've got a manual trans, we're autos..
